Wolfie00 : Time for an update. My sandbox system that I use for testing stuff, and on which I successfully installed SP3, also has an HP Scanjet 4200C scanner on it. I rarely use it but I needed it last night. Lo and behold, it doesn't friggin' work any more. Reinstalled the driver. Still doesn't work. At this point I uninstall SP3, uninstall the HP driver again, and reinstall the driver once more. The scanner now works. Having removed it from my test system I now have no system at all with SP3. As always, YMMV. And I have heard from others that some HP scanner drivers are flaky anyway, and in all fairness, this is not a WHQL certified driver, although I will maintain that it shouldn't matter.
--
"Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace" -- Dr. Albert Schweitzer
"A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

dennilfloss : OK. I am pretty much back to where I was. Main difference is that I managed to delete the 'secure partition'. In so doing, Perfect Image merged it with my C partition and my empty D partition. So now my C partition is 36GB instead of 14GB but I worry of resizing it down. The extra size will probably be useful when I install Vista's successor anyway. Not gonna use a secure partition again. I'll just make images on each of my two hard disks and burn one to DVD-Rs when I back up.

Only thing I lost was my SETI folder and data but I was about to quit distributed computing soon anyway, at least for a while. Reason why Perfect Image could not recreate a secure partition initially is that I already had 4 basic partitions and that seems to be the maximum allowed by Windows.

Now I just want to play some Oblivion and ignore SP3 for a while until they patch this. :)

Wolfie00 : The biggest problem with Vista (aside from the bugs and the hardware demands) is the absence of a truly compelling reason to use it. It's not that you can't list some things it may have improved over XP, it's that those things aren't as revolutionary as the switch from the Win9x "pretend" OS layered on DOS to the real NT kernel with NT facilities like event viewer, performance monitor, services, group policies, etc., or the switch from FAT32 to NTFS that XP offered. Hell, NTFS and stability alone were more than enough to justify the switch to XP!!

Anyway, back on topic, it bugs me to see all these folks having problems with SP3 installs when it isn't really all that important, which is what I was saying in the earlier post. XP SP2 was a very important functional upgrade, SP3 basically is not. I will definitely slipstream it to an install CD for any new installs, and it works fine on my test system, but for existing systems I can take it or leave it, I don't think it will make much difference for the vast majority of users. But then, I've always been very cautious about indiscriminate updates.
--
"Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace" -- Dr. Albert Schweitzer
"A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

Wolfie00 : Yes, I installed it on April 29 on one of my "play" systems that I use for experimenting with stuff. But it doesn't really buy you anything much. Remember that when SP2 came out (which had so many changes it was practically a new OS -- and is now a baseline for many products!) XP was Microsoft's star product and Billy was pulling all the stops to improve it. Now that Billy and Ballmer are flogging Vista, it's like Microsoft is going out of its way to makes sure any XP improvements are limited!

From a combination of direct experience and stuff I have read:

SP3 is in no way like SP2, which brought significant new functionality enhancements. It is essentially a rollup of existing updates; some have said it was intended primarily to help with corporate XP deployments and not particularly intended (or useful) for consumers at all. As if to underscore that point, it doesn't even contain IE7 -- so you end up with a system that looks (and works) exactly like before. Minor functionality updates include black-hole router detection, Network Access Protection (NAP) which is a corporate networking security enhancement that arrived with Vista and Server 2008, and supposedly exFAT (an enhanced FAT32 that also came with Visata) although I haven't seen official confirmation of that.

Microsoft itself describes the purpose of SP3 this way:

- Provide a new baseline for customers still deploying Windows XP, to help them avoid the inconvenience of applying individual updates.

- Fill gaps in the updates users might have missed by declining individual updates when using Automatic Updates, and to deliver updates not made available through Windows Update.

i.e.-- not very exciting. It did install with no problem and works fine though. Some issues have been reported but that was also true for SP2. The only reason for the delay in releasing it to Windows Update was that there was a known problem with a retail MS product called Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Having been officially released to manufacturing (RTM), SP3 was not changed -- the delay was to implement a filter to Windows Update to prevent RMS users from downloading SP3 (or Vista SP1) unless they installed an RMS patch first.
--
"Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace" -- Dr. Albert Schweitzer
"A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher
