| Still use my Inforanger?
Hi all! Okay this is a wierd one. I called to have Cogeco High speed activated and wanted to use my Inforanger SCM-100R again on the network, and was told ... sorry but your modem is limited to 5 mbps and it would be a better idea to rent ours. I bought the thing 4 years ago after having rented it for 4 years, and it never conked out or anything! Plus the specs on the modem say it SUPPORTS up to 40 mbps. I am in quebec, and I saw a post that said that almost all modems in quebec are RCAs ... so I'm guessing that I would be receiving an RCA. Here is the question ... Is it true that the modem only supports 5 mbps or was I being jerked around and the main reason is because most modems are RCAs in QC some people don't want to bother with the "old" technology for set-up? |

| Well, the deal with the Inforangers is that their Ethernet Port to connect to your PC is 10Mbit Half Duplex. While the DOCSIS part of the Modem can do up to 40mbit, the Ethernet port can't.
Effective use at half duplex won't get you up to the speeds that are offered now. -- Some people think I'm an idiot. I disagree, but idiocy is subjective--so they may well be right. With this in mind, take everything I post with a grain of salt, eh? |

| reply to nevertheless Ok but if the connection is an 8 mbit the basically there is no problem with the modem correct? It will be running within parameters and function well? If so, then why would a technician say oh it's locked at 5 mbps, it cant go any faster? Laziness on their part? lol |

Laziness on their part? lol The tech didn't say anything wrong, he/she merely "dumbed down" the whole Ethernet port situation by saying the modem is "limited" to 5Mbit/s, which is roughly correct (I've seen them do between 5-7 myself) -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |

| reply to drawmada I never saw greater than about 5.5 Mbps on my Inforanger, and when it was doing that, latency skyrocketed to 300-400ms. Trading it in for an RCA resulted in an instantaneous speed increase.
In Ontario we don't rent modems, so I just took the old one back and got a new one in replacement. I guess in your case this is different. |

Well thanks for the enlightenment hehe ... now I understand much better |

If so, then why would a technician say oh it's locked at 5 mbps, it cant go any faster? Laziness on their part? lol Problem is there's no more 8Mb connections... it's now 10...
Official numbers of the Inforanger Rev.1 :
Modem Type**************speed/duplex**** Download**********Upload Samsung SCM100R***********10/Half*******4.5 Mbps********120 Kbps
Your speeds MIGHT be actually a LITTLE higher if you have a higher revision, but the higher it got was 5.8 Mbps... Out of a possible speed of 10Mbps, I wouldn't even hesitate to get a new one... Getting 1125 Mbps instead of 400-600 is a huge difference...
So the tech indeed dumbed down the information, but was totally correct when he mentionned that...
Also please note that if we need to send a technician to your place and that he says your modem was the problem, you'll be charged for the service call by the technician...
Another point to consider is that Inforangers aren't supported anymore in Québec; so if anything goes wrong with an upgrade, config file or whatnot, you might end up with an unworking modem; thus needing a service call which you'll end up paying full charge (up to 89.99) ...
Renting a modem, at 3$ a month, ensures you get the best speeds available, free service calls if anything happens, and full support when you call tech support.
IMHO it's a small fee to pay to get all the advantages of the new modems without having to bother with an old modem that's only good for 3rd world countries...

The only difference, really, it that the renting fee is included in your package offer and the modem is leased :P |

| reply to Asawulf Thanks Asawulf ... well I didn't take the rental because I honestly thought that with the previous experience I had with my Inforanger that I wouldn't have any problems. Oh well live and learn ... My Inforanger ran well with my service (2000-2005) and a tech had even upgraded the firmware at the time to the latest (we're talking latest revision in fall 2005) ... And now also I'm going to feel a bit stupid calling back a fourth time to tell them to add back on the rental lol ... thanks for all the help in explaining everything all of you |

| Noone is stupid for not knowing my friend
Send me your actual MAC adress on the InfoRanger (in private message) so I can locate your account and if you want, I can send you a new modem and do the rental thing without anyone knowing I'll even check your signals to see if everything is within spec
I actually know which one of my techs you talked to |
