I never saw greater than about 5.5 Mbps on my Inforanger, and when it was doing that, latency skyrocketed to 300-400ms. Trading it in for an RCA resulted in an instantaneous speed increase.

In Ontario we don't rent modems, so I just took the old one back and got a new one in replacement. I guess in your case this is different.
