| [Hamilton] SOHO Speeds...what can I reasonably expect?
So I just got Cogeco SOHO 16mbps Service installed and I'm seeing speeds of
and probably more accurately:

so, 12000kb, it's not 16, but I imagine that's about as close as you can get?
I just like to make sure I'm getting what I pay for, if anyone can comment it'd be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! |

Well, I don't know any details of your issues since you haven't filled out the form, but if you want to try to get closer to the advertised speeds (which you should be getting) - »Have a problem? | 1)What, specifically, is your issue? - Speeds lower than advertised.
a) Is there a specific time that this issue is most prevalent? Don't really know, shouldn't really matter what time. 16mb is always 16 mb?
b) How long has this issue been going on? (days, weeks, months etc) Only got the service today.
2) Do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation..what channels? Yes cogeco Digital tv, channels seem fine so far
3) Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say? Not yet. I wanted to hear from other cogeco customers in the area to see if this speed was normal. From there I can decide whether or not to keep the service.
4) What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? (aka: if you haven't tried to help yourself, why should *we* help you?) Not really sure WHAT steps i can take? The tech ran a new line from the pole and split it from the box outside to the modem. He said my signals were 'fantastic'
5) Info about you: a) What city are you in? - Hamilton b) What is your operating system? Windows XP c) What is your home network setup? Linksys N router, 3 wireless laptops, 2 wired desktops.
d) If you have more than one computer, is the problem occuring on all other machines?
e) Are you running a firewall of any sort? Have you ever installed one? Did you try to turn it off during troubleshooting?no firewall

edit: which computer are you testing from? Bypass your Wireless-N router and connect your fastest PC direct to the cable modem then test again |

said by ixiom :c) What is your home network setup? Linksys N router, 3 wireless laptops, 2 wired desktops. What is experience when you have a single computer connected directly to the modem? You need to first rule out the home network and although I may well be biased I have experience nothing but trouble with Linksys devices. Try one device directly connected for a test for a while.

If you have a friend with a non-Linksys router it might be worth borrowing it for a test just to see if there's any difference but glad to hear you've at least narrowed down the problem. -- you can lead a horse to the water but you cannot make him drink...you can put a man through school but you cannot make him think --ben harper

That way it's hard for Cogeco to blame much else. |

I've noticed the same thing. My workstation wired right into the router in the basement maxes out the connection (at all times of the day, thanks node split!) but the wireless machines only pull 8-12, depending on reception conditions. It's just something you have to learn to live with.
