I spend a lot of time in screen connected to networking equipment and boards, but this is first time using IRC and wanted a few baby steps while settling into a routine on new job.
irssi is pretty straight forward. You just add the network (server) and channels you want and you can have them auto-connect/auto-join, etc. Once you've set that up, you're done. And changing windows is easy enough - alt-1, alt-2, etc. I highly recommend it, as you can connect from somewhere else and just bring up your screen session to get back to irc. Not sure if that's pertinent here, but it's a plus.

That was first client I used as it supports client ssl certs. But the UI didn't agree with me and sent me running for another option.
