| Over the years we have advised users to get both services and compare them side by side for a month. That way you can do your own comparison and not listen to some "shill" on here that may be trying to "colour" the situation. If you have one service already, keep that current service and install the second and do your own very detailed comparison. Hope you find out what is best for you. -- My Canada includes Quebec. |

@cgocable.net | Thanks for the response, but I'm still wondering if is really worth it to change to DSL since I don't know if Cogeco is being throttled too like Bell because sometimes Cogeco seems really slow. |

@cogeco.net | reply to darkmage I have Cogeco and it's great. Much better than Bell who I have used in the past before their decline. Cogeco has excellent speed and is extremely reliable.
Look into their business packages if you need a higher bandwidth allowance. |

| reply to darkmage Maybe a few years ago that was a good way to do it, but its no longer a good way due to the following:
#1) If you try it for a month and then cancel, Bell will charge you 2 months total (30-advance cancellation notice). So that 30 day trial sticks you for 60-days of payments.
#2) There are horrid stories here (way too many) of cancellation problems. Some people sign up only to find out the rep who took their order put them on a year or 2 year contract. Then when you cancel Bell demands 100$ or 200$ to cancel your internet account + 30 days advance notice.
#3) Bell Reps aren't transparant in what they are selling you. There are too many occurances of someone signing up and the rep offers them a very cool price, even "unlimited" (which is a lie). But they don't tell the customer this will put them on a year or multi-year contract. Refer to #2.
Though Glen1 may be recalling the "wonder years" over at bell, these "wonder years" no longer exist and Bell will make you jump through hoops to cancel your "trial" internet service and try its best to get every possible nickle and dime out of you if you do cancel.
I do not recommend to you, or anyone, to attempt a side-by-side trial with Bell due to the rampant, non-transparant problems you may encounter.
A better choice would be to perform a side-by-side comparison with a 3rd party wholesale DSL ISP (example teksavvy or Ebox) who will not give you the cancellation hassles or try to nickle & dime you to death as Bell will try to do to you.
Be warned.
On another note, everything I have read shows cogeco to be the better choice.
If you want throttled unlimited access with the hassles that come with DSL technology, you are better off looking at a DSL wholesaler since sympatico won't give you unlimited |

| The only problem with the wholesale ISP would be the requirement to purchase a modem...Sympatico's modem is a rental. If you prefer the DSL connection over the cable connection for whatever reason you could always go to a 3rd party provider of DSL after your testing period. If you have cancellation problems, you could ask the third party ISP ie: Teksavvy to assist you in getting your service straight with Bell. I like a challenge.
Edit: after all isn't this really a discussion of one technology over another? I just PM'd Rocky (Teksavvy) for his opinion. -- My Canada includes Quebec. |

| reply to darkmage Ok, I decided not to go for Bell but I would like your opinions about Velcom because they offer unlimited bandwidth service which I really need. About Cogeco, what I don't like about them is that they are way overpriced with their Basic & premium plans, and the 60GB bandwidth a month is just ridiculous. So I'm looking for an ISP that doesn't cost $42.95 a month for a Standard plan or even $62.95 a month for the Pro plan which is way overpriced. |

@NetSurf.Net
| true, but residential plans are only 60 or 100 gig. Cogeco doesnt let you go far over your gig allotment (a few percent). if you do go over they 1st) email you a warning & throttle your connection to ISDN speeds, and if you still keep going (I think they give you like 100 meg after warning) they cut your Internet access for the rest of the month! And no, you can't purchase more gig or reset the account - your SOL until the month is up. |

@NetSurf.Net | reply to Adam20 oh, and from my experience, Cogeco rarely negotiates installation fees. They pretty much own the Niagara market so they know its either Cogeco or your stuck with 1 meg dsl service. |

The original poster is an existing customer so he would not be charged for installation. |

| reply to darkmage Hello Darkmage,
As Glen1 stated and in all fairness for Velcom and Cogeco it would be best to try both services side by side. Reason is; xDSL and Cable is two unique services and work in a different way.
Kind Regards,

| reply to darkmage well i have bell and i'm not too satisfied, but there the best that i can get in a rural area on a wire. i heard that cable internet is fast but cable isn't available too everyone just only works in cities on towns, not out in the middle of nowhere like me. I'd say Cogeco wins |
