| It just drops
I have had several times now, and not very close together a loss of network but not sync. The connection to the internet just times out. The modem I use (3346n) in the home page just says not connected in red and I have all green lights. I have tried another modem and it has the same result. I also noticed that the dns is not present with no IP from AT&T. I wonder if they are working on the network here in Springfield MO. |

wayjac Premium join:2001-12-22 Indy | reply to justsurfin30 That sounds like the PPPoE session is down. You can have sync and no PPPoE session you may be able to see if the modem is ending the PPPoE or if its being done on at&t's side. Look at the modem log. |

| reply to justsurfin30 My ATM circuit goes to Springfield as well (at least according to the DNS naming), and I've noticed the same thing in the last few days with my 2Wire. This has happened at least 5 times since Saturday evening.
Thanks for posting, that tells us it's probably not at our end. My DSL has otherwise been rock solid since I got it 15 months ago. |

| Do you have a lot of messages like this: 2008/01/08 19:28:35 GMT | L4 | RFC1483-1 up
This line may indicate trouble on the loop, errors. 5/7/08 09:30:14 PM L4 lcp: link dead - closing connection
The 2210 log isn't as useful as the speedstream log, but you may want to set the modem to keep the log on restart, that along with the other stats may offer some clues to what the issue is. |

My service was rock solid until now as well. |

| reply to justsurfin30 I guess Saturday night was not good for DSL. I found I was off line this morning. Here is a copy of the log from last night that I saved before I rebooted the router. The time is 1 hour early, and I can not seem to control it. The other is after reboot till 2:30 in the afternoon. As you notice the reboot did not come up with an IP for a little while. I just went to church and left it. |

| reply to justsurfin30 did it to me too wednesday night, thursday during the day and yesterday evening here in Dallas
even with all 4 solid green lights on the modem I couldn't connect
I called AT&T and Tier 2 told me that their test shows something was not right so they are sending a tech out on Tuesday
now everything is working fine again and the tech may not find anything wrong with it |

| reply to justsurfin30 I never seem to lose sync on the line. Line loss and attenuation seem to always be at the same spot. Phone service is good and very quiet when I listen to the line. My son plays Star Wars on line and is complaining of some lag. He very seldom has lag. He does load the line with the game and a ventrilo voice over ip most of the time. |

I've been having outages of up to an hour, multiple times per day, since Thursday 5/1. Always have sync but no PPPoE connection. |

| reply to justsurfin30 Here as requested by David is a full report of my disconnection history. I'll continue to edit this message as long as I can and then add new ones, and will add reports on the dedicated forum as incidents happen.
This is the pattern of not ever losing sync (unless I reset the 2wire) but losing the Internet connection, the 2wire eventually succeeding in logging in, and then the IP address change daemon, which checks every 5 minutes, noticing and reporting the change.
I switched to OpenDNS on 4/9 due to the reports of targeted attacks on AT&T 2wire gateways, and use ChangeIP for logging purposes (which turned out to be a very good thing!), no servers are being run. Before this problem started, my DSL has been ROCK SOLID since it was set up early Feburary 2007.
The one on the morning of 5/11 also coincided with my father losing his IP connection, he's about a mile away from me in Joplin, MO, probably a different DSLAM but otherwise the same setup of an ATM circuit routed to (I assume from DNS naming) Springfield, MO.
The times listed are Pacific unless otherwise noted.
On 5/13 at 10:45-50 am Central time or thereabouts, I noticed a loss of ability to send packets but the 2wire said I'm logged in at the current IP address 70.244.239.36. My IP address monitoring daemon reports this as an inability to detect an IP address, so the log entires below without annotation may be this sort of failure instead of a "have sync, no IP connection" failure. Traceroute fails beyond the 2wire gateway LAN address (192.168.x.x).
I initiated a 2wire soft reset at this point (10:56 am), after which I got IP address 75.6.x.x. Not sure what to make of this failure:
5/13/2008 08:59:05 AM 75.6.x.x (forced 2wire reset at 10:56 am)
This one's weird (then again, I don't monitor for the first type of problem): first I seem to have lost the ability to send or receive packets, but the daemon that monitors my IP address didn't not report it being lost for the ~ 15 minute interval of that. Then I could send and receive packets for 10 minutes, followed by the usual have sync but no Internet connection for 20 minutes:
5/13/2008 06:02:34 AM 70.244.239.36 (lost at 7:39 am Central, recovery at I think 8:00 am) 5/13/2008 kept IP address but couldn't send or receive 7:14 am Central time start, recovery at 7:29.
5/13/2008 05:00:01 AM 75.6.6.71 (~ 6:52 am Central time start, 7am restore, I was not able to confirm this was a sync retained Internet connection loss before the connection was restored) 5/13/2008 01:12:28 AM 70.242.165.161 5/12/2008 08:37:26 PM 70.242.165.114 5/12/2008 06:47:31 AM 75.42.238.179 (started at 8:25 AM Central time.) 5/11/2008 07:17:29 PM 75.42.239.97 5/11/2008 06:46:00 AM 70.242.160.167 (started at 7:40 AM Central time) 5/07/2008 08:59:47 PM 70.243.108.36 5/07/2008 07:24:47 PM 70.244.239.25 5/07/2008 05:54:47 PM 69.154.110.200 5/07/2008 03:39:47 PM 70.244.238.78 5/06/2008 08:54:50 PM 70.244.238.246 5/05/2008 09:04:53 PM 69.154.109.151 5/05/2008 06:24:53 PM 68.89.0.40 5/05/2008 05:34:53 PM 70.244.237.206 5/05/2008 11:59:55 AM 75.6.6.86 5/01/2008 09:29:08 PM 68.89.0.241 5/01/2008 03:09:08 PM 68.89.1.126 5/01/2008 03:08:56 PM 68.89.1.126 4/15/2008 01:14:21 AM 70.242.165.118
The second record for 5/1 03:09:08 PM probably represents me accidently forcing an second IP address report through the daemon but cannot be a connection loss, it's 12 seconds after the first. I probably also forced the first report that day as soon as I noticed that my connection was reestablished. All the other changes are probably records of this problem, except perhaps the one on 4/15.
Good hunting!
