| [XP Pro] Uninstalled Updates and SP3
I uninstalled KB920872 because I got a BSOD after installation, none since uninstalled. I've set Windows Update not to remind me again of KB920872.
I assume this update is included in SP3 so is it going to be installed with it? If so, is there anyway to get rid of it after SP3? I don't want BSODs again... -- All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing - Edmund Burke. "Walk the Talk". |

| KB920872 is included in SP3 so to remove KB920872 after installing SP3 you would have to uninstall SP3.
Do you have any minidump files from the BSODs you received after installing KB920872 - the minidump files are located in the C:\Windows\minidump folder.
If so, can you zip up the minidump files and upload them to this thread? |

| Yep, 5 files zipped. The problem appears to be with kmixer.sys
Thanks for taking a look. |

| The minidump files showed that the kmixer.sys and sysaudio.sys were involved in the crashes.
There have been some reports of problems with KB920872 and Soundmax integrated audio such as losing sound after applying the update.
It may help if you could obtain an updated driver for the Soundmax integrated audio.
I would also suggest to see if you can obtain an updated driver for your graphics.
It appears you have a laptop? What make/model do you have? |

| It's an IBM ThinkCentre S50 desktop, model 8183-D7U.
I have V. 5.12.1.5410 (3/28/05) installed which I think is the latest version of Soundmax audio for that PC.
For video it's V. 6.14.10.4396 (9/20/05) for the Intel 82865G video controller. -- All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing - Edmund Burke. "Walk the Talk". |

| Can you check the following two drivers which should be located in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder:
smwdm.sys
ialmnt5.sys
Can you right-click each of these two files > Version
What is the "file version" of these two files? |

| Ok, you appear to be running the latest version of the sound and graphics driver.
Looking at the minidump files you posted seems to indicate a problem with the kmixer.sys and sysaudio.sys.
Both of these drivers will be updated with SP3. The sysaudio.sys was not updated with KB920872 - the hotfix that caused the issue on your system.
Because KB920872 caused an issue does not necessarily mean that SP3 will cause the same issue. But that possibilty does exist.
If you are thinking about installing SP3 the sysaudio.sys and other system drivers will get updated and the issue that existed after KB920872 may not exist after installing SP3. |
