[Rant] Woman fired for giving baby a free Timbit

Woman fired for giving baby a free Timbit

JENNIFER O'BRIEN

The Canadian Press

May 7, 2008 at 10:49 PM EDT

LONDON, Ont. — — Giving a free Timbit to a baby has cost a single mother of four her job.

Nicole Lilliman, 27, was fired Wednesday from her Tim Hortons job in this southwestern Ontario city for giving one of the 16-cent blobs of fried dough to a tot who came in with a regular customer.

“I have been fired for giving a baby a Timbit,” Ms. Lilliman said Wednesday.

“It was just out of my heart — she was pointing and going ‘ah, ah. . .' I should have gone to my purse and got the change, but it was busy.”

Ms. Lilliman, who has worked at the store for three years, said she thought little of the incident since Timbits are often doled out to dogs and children.

She said the baby was about 11 months old, and she gave her the treat to quiet her, since her mother – a Tims' regular – had been “having a bad day.”

“I could see [the dismissal] if it was a sandwich or something,” she said. “But it was a Timbit.”

She'd forgotten about the Monday-morning incident until she was called into the office Wednesday.

Three managers greeted her, saying she had been caught on video, giving free food to a child.

“They said, ‘Remember, Monday you gave out a free Timbit,' ” she said. “I had to think, then I was like, ‘Oh yeah,' and I smiled because I thought I'd get a warning.”

Instead, she was fired for theft.

Giving food away free is against the rules, said Tim Hortons district manager Nicole Mitchell.

“Employees aren't allowed to give out free products and that's the bottom line,” she said. “She gave out free product and it doesn't matter if it is a Timbit or a coffee or a doughnut or 10 sandwiches or what.”

The Timbits given to pets, Ms. Mitchell added, are usually “day-old and recycled.”

Clearly there's some sort of agenda here because it's a known fact that Timmie's gives free timbits to any dog that comes through. This reeks.

Exactly. Babies always get free Timbits, it's almost a sort of unofficial rule. There's got to be more to this story than what we're reading here.

It was at Baseline and Wharncliffe according to the Free Press.

Sounds like this store is local to some of you folks.

I suspect there will be an up roar over the firing, it should be interesting .

Oh wow. I used to manage that store back in a previous life. I'm not surprised, but I also think there's more to the story.

And once again, it's because of owners like this that I refuse to shop at Tim Hortons.

and the high prices, and the low quality, and the ever diminishing portion sizes. I think the list can go on.

Yeah... I should have mentioned that... mind you - she's been hired by another store. One can assume a different owner then.

Not necessarily a different owner. The guy who owns that location owns at least 8 other stores in town.

I wonder if the manager was disciplined.

Interesting, on reading the headline of the thread only, I assumed it was because of some health concern - sugar overload to the baby, possible choking hazard, or perhaps an allergic reaction threat etc......

But NO, the bastads were only concerned about the overkindness of an employee, who knew her local customers and the situation. Shame on that manager for being out of touch with 'the community' of the shop and for being such a scrinch or grooge if you will.

I'm betting that in enforcing this rule they're a) trying to send a message, b) they had something against her to begin with or c) the managers are just dicks.

You said it right there. After working at Tim Hortons for four years, I'm sure they would rather sack this woman who has probably gotten a few raises her and there and replace her with some high school bitch who they can pay minimum wage for until she quits to go back to school/better job/whatever. That's the shame of it all, because the morons they'll hire to replace her will no doubt not attract the same loyalty and generate business like this woman did by giving away a Timbit that cost the company a few cents to make.

Same owner of franchise, different store...probably management issue at that specific store .

I don't know if I'm pro or con, in the toronto star article she thought she was going to get a warning from it...

But I don't get it...do some franchise owners just not care about the communities they are in? Like everyone said, a 5 or 10 cent timbit to make isn't going to impact the bottom line in a negative fashion...

Its sad...unfortunately...if I had enough $$$ I'd be a tim horton's owner and do it right...unfortunately it takes money to make money...

Ever diminishing portion sizes?

What Tim Hortons is giving smaller portions?

I worked at Tim Hortons for 10 years and the only time I saw portion sizes go down was when they switched to frozen donuts. The only reason the sizes went down was because the bakers in store weren't following company policy.

All coffee cup sizes have stayed the same ever since I started working there.
