About the crossover cable, my dsl modem (westell 2100) had dhcp built in, but with out a router,(when I connect a computer directly to the modem, I can never get the comp on the internet with out a router. I think I still might need a crossover cuz the manual mentions something about it
If the router you mentioned is configured with PPPoE for the WAN connection, then your DSL modem is not configured to dial the PPPoE connection automatically. Which means your ATA will have to be configured that way. I suggest you ask your VoIP provider how to do that.
