| Network question - new DSL modem
OK, I know there is something basic I am missing, but I figure you guys know quicker than I can recall --
Have a setup with a linksys wired router/speedstream 5360 dsl modem, with the router doing the PPOE connection -- dsl modem went bad, replaced it with the new
motorola 2210 or whatever the standard is.
Went into modem settings, changed it to bridged mode to continue to let the router do the PPOE -- but I couldn't even connect to the router after I did this ??
I'm ok with doing the PPOE on the dsl modem is fine too, but I can't change the router settings to allow me to do that either, as I can't get to the router setup screen now ?
Clearly I am missing something basic ??
DSL/modem work fine direct connect, but trying to put the router back in the loop either as ppoe or not, I am missing a step... |

North Richland Hills, TX | Perhaps you fogot to change the ip of the router so that there is not a ip collission occuring?? 192.168.2.1 should work fine. |

I can't get into the router gui to change anything there since then though... |

In the new modem is there a setting check to detect router behind router. |

| Well I'm about to fall over dead (work 3rd shift), so if I suggest something that is really stupid, just smack me around a bit.
Since I've never owned a Linksys router I really have no clue but doesn't the DSL modem have a option to use either a private ip or a public ip? Perhaps it's set on public which might be a problem for the router? Or vice versa? |

Reboot the computer, the modem is on a different subnet than the router. |

| I would reset the modem then see if you can access the modems GUI, if you can then reconnect to the router see if you can access it then. your PC should be set to obtain an IP address automatically .. if you are unable to to access the router but you can access then modem then there is something wrong with the router or maybe even a software firewall blocking the router's ip address...I know sounds like a lot of work but if all you did was replace the basic modem with the 2210 and placed it in bridgemode this should not affect your ability to access the router... |

OP put the modem into bridged mode; it shouldn't be assigning IP address in bridged mode because IP addresses are layer 3 stuff, and bridged mode is layer 2.

Disconnect the cable from the router to the modem; can you reach the router now? If not, reset the router and start over from factory defaults. Then try adding the modem back.

I meant that towards the comment of him not caring if the modem did the PPPOE work thinking perhaps he tried that method already. Now that I've re-read it, I see my comment is still wrong. Next time I'll try to stop myself from posting when I'm that tired. :P |

Well I finally got it working -- the odd part is, I probably had it working earlier but didn't know it, because there was a dns problem with the setup...
For some reason I had the connection working fine, but dns wouldn't work on the computer, though there were dns addresses in the modem and the router both, and comp was set to pull dns dynamically...
Added the dns servers manually to the comp and got everything working again, thanks all for the help, |
