14400 connecting from a wired pc which is probably about as good as it gets, thanks all. The other speeds must just have been the limitation of wireless .
If you have a friend with a non-Linksys router it might be worth borrowing it for a test just to see if there's any difference but glad to hear you've at least narrowed down the problem.
