I can't speak for the more senior management, since one never seems to see them around, but the middle management would usually appear to be the same people that were hired 6 months ago and haven't quit yet. These are the same people who only three months prior would have given me 50% coffee and 50% cream when I asked for coffee with half a cream, or put everything in to-go bags when I stated right off the bat (when they asked) that I was eating in. So expecting them to make reasonable PR and other decisions as "management" is probably too much to expect. :uhh:

Brain? Probably, but likely has a large ego to compensate. :p

Everyone has worked for someone like this in the past: they talk a good game to get hired and know absolutely zilch about dealing with employees. Often, they use intimidation (by voice, size, etc) to "keep the staff in line". Sooner or later, they do something incredibly bone-headed and that's the end of their time with the company. Sadly, the time between hiring and firing is very bad for those under them.

My post above was differentiating between strength and behaviour. I don't disagree with you one bit. Strength is not a masculine characteristic, although I would say that aggression tends to be. I've had male bosses who were incredible jerks; but, the worst boss I ever had was a woman. By no means, though, do I assume that it was because she is a woman that she was such a terrible boss. Frankly, I think she was just a mean person (and that crosses all gender and cultural boundaries). In fact, one of the best bosses I've had was also a woman.

Actually, and this is only my theory more or less off the top of my head, what I've found is that women who get ahead in the corporate world (i.e., in those domains traditionally "ruled" by men) tend to have qualities and characteristics (for better or for worse) that are more masculine. So I wouldn't say that they're trying to prove that they're strong, I'd say that they're just acting like men and, in my opinion, that doesn't come off well for a woman. A man acting in exactly the same way would receive different treatment because society attributes different levels of tolerance to behaviour based on the gender displaying it.

I'm not suggesting that men can't be assholes, or that a woman with masculine, behavioural characteristics is automatically a jerk. But I think women are misread in these situations because they're being evaluated according to societal standards for femininity when that is, to some extent, an inappropriate standard to be using.

The District Manager isn't the one that fired her.
Perhaps not. But why again do you assume the manager that fired her was male? I don't think Tim Horton's management is exactly a male-dominated field. In fact, if they promote from within, female employees seem to outnumber men.

Doesn't matter. If that's true, then it makes this boneheaded move over a Timbit even stupider than I thought. Because if true it means she could have been legitimately fired for performance reasons, and instead this management genius picks an invented excuse that tells the whole country his corporation would rather save a couple of cents than give a treat to the baby of a regular customer. Companies like Timmy's spend millions on advertising just to try to create a positive image, and this one jerk has just negated a big chunk of that -- over an item so trivial that people are infuriated. No matter what faults this woman may have had, there's absolutely no way to put a positive spin on this idiocy!

This story went out nationally over the Canadian Press wire on May 7. It's been widely covered in newspapers from coast to coast. As the Globe and Mail put it, the story "... threatened to become a public relations nightmare as [it] gained traction in the media Thursday."

All coffee cup sizes have stayed the same ever since I started working there.
I know that muffin size is getting smaller. Years ago they had to tie them down.

LONDON, Ont. — — Giving a free Timbit to a baby has cost a single mother of four her job.

Nicole Lilliman, 27, was fired Wednesday from her Tim Hortons job in this southwestern Ontario city for giving one of the 16-cent blobs of fried dough to a tot who came in with a regular customer.

“I have been fired for giving a baby a Timbit,” Ms. Lilliman said Wednesday.

“It was just out of my heart — she was pointing and going ‘ah, ah. . .' I should have gone to my purse and got the change, but it was busy.”

Ms. Lilliman, who has worked at the store for three years, said she thought little of the incident since Timbits are often doled out to dogs and children.

She said the baby was about 11 months old, and she gave her the treat to quiet her, since her mother – a Tims' regular – had been “having a bad day.”

“I could see [the dismissal] if it was a sandwich or something,” she said. “But it was a Timbit.”

She'd forgotten about the Monday-morning incident until she was called into the office Wednesday.

Three managers greeted her, saying she had been caught on video, giving free food to a child.

“They said, ‘Remember, Monday you gave out a free Timbit,' ” she said. “I had to think, then I was like, ‘Oh yeah,' and I smiled because I thought I'd get a warning.”

Instead, she was fired for theft.

Giving food away free is against the rules, said Tim Hortons district manager Nicole Mitchell.

“Employees aren't allowed to give out free products and that's the bottom line,” she said. “She gave out free product and it doesn't matter if it is a Timbit or a coffee or a doughnut or 10 sandwiches or what.”
