Questions regarding switching back to DSL

Hello all:
It's been quite a while since I posted in this forum due to me having Comcast. Now, I'm considering switching back to AT&T, due to Comcast's capping. I have a few questions regarding the DSL service, more specifically, the Elite package.

- Is anything capped, other than the speed of the connection?

- Are torrents throttled?

- What are the current modems supplied by AT&T?

- Am I able to run a server?

- Also, what is the domain that the email accounts are at? Is it still sbcglobal.net?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Tim.

Nothing is capped. The connection throughput is set at the rate described by the package 'speed'. I have 'elite' and the modem runs at 6016/768 with a payload throughput of 5100/640 once the ATM, etc. overhead takes it's bite out of the raw bitrate.

(That was run with two inbound 128kbps Internet radio streams going.)

No throttles.

The current modems are a Motorola modem (I forget the number but it's the one at Best Buy) and a 2-Wire WiFi gateway.

Servers are permitted. I've run them for 8 years.

You'll probably get an att.net address.

Thanks, I used to have the "Pro" service, which was less-than-satisfactory for me, but at the moment, the "Elite" service appears to be better than the garbage I have through Comcast right now... especially with the rumoured caps.

Also, does the 2Wire allow me to do port forwarding?

AT&T is also working on U-Verse in your area as well. Not sure if it is green yet or if it will be green soon, but Plainfield is an area they are working to get. So TV + Internet from AT&T either already is or could soon be an option to you, too. And with AT&T U-Verse Internet, the fastest tier goes all the way to 10 meg down/1.5 meg up.

From what I have heard yes. You may need to order the TV programing but then can cxl after 30 days and keep the HSI.

I've decided to go with the DSL as opposed to U-Verse. We don't watch much TV, and the addt'l upstream isn't worth it to have to spend the money on the TV service.
