Re: [OOL] Moving (IP Address)

Thanks a lot for both of your responses. It's greatly appreciated. I tried to e-mail OOL to see what they say, and this is their response:

Thank you for contacting Optimum Online regarding your question about your IP address. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and will be happy to assist.

Optimum Online uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to assign IP addresses automatically. This means the IP addresses are assigned automatically and will change from time to time. To directly answer your question; Yes your IP will be different when you move and No there is no way to keep your IP address with the move.

So should I go with what this person is saying, or take that with a grain of salt?

What you should be doing is using dynamic DNS and not worrying about what your IP address will be. What the rep said is correct -- you're on DHCP. While it probably wont change when you move the short distance, theres nothing that prevents it from doing so. Just like it can change at any time now, you may get in the new apt and it changes 2 weeks after you move.

If you're using the same modem, it can probably keep its IP address, provided as Ken says, it's still connected to the same UBR/Node.
