| This is unbelievable (RANT)
I realize that the ATT employees that come here to help others know what there doing and I am very thankful that they take the time to come here to help but for the rest of ATT, nothing but morons....
Today, it rains and like always my DSL goes down the drain because somewhere along the line something is getting wet...
Stupid me I call in, The first problem was waiting on hold for 5 mins, second problem, I was put on hold for another 3 mins after asking to talk with Tier2 because I refuse to talk with someone named Bob...I end up talking with the tier1 manager instead, I ask for Tier2 again. Once again I wait another 5 mins before talking with Tier 2.
What does Tier2 suggest? I should think about dropping down from the 6MB plan to the 3MB plan...
Now here is the problem with this idea. I upgrade to the 6MB package when ATT first introduced the 3MB package. Remember that? That was like 4 years ago... If you called in and asked, you got 6MB instead of 3mb and then our accounts ended up being grandfathered in??
That's how long I've had 6MB and the only time I've EVER had an issue with it is when it rains. Yet the morons at ATT have the nerve to tell me I should downgrade to fix the problem.... To make it worse the guy then starts throwing out all sorts of ideas that could be the problem. The only problem he did not suggest was the problem really is on there end!
How hard is it to understand the following, I ONLY have problems with my DSL when it rains and that as soon as it dries up outside the problems go away....
Companies that can't admit the problem just might be on there end, are the ones that end up going under. I can't even begin to think of what kind of headache I would have if I had U-Suck.
To finish off this rant and my venting, am I the only one who thinks it's stupid that while your on hold waiting to talk to someone about your connection problems, you hear message after message about how you can go online and fix many problems that way...
EXCUSE ME, If I could go online, I wouldn't be calling the DSL department!
EDIT: I forgot to ask, Can someone explain to me how dropping to 3MB could be faster for me instead of 6MB? Yes this is something Tier 2 said to me and I really don't see how the 3MB package could be faster then the 600KB/sec I get now... |

| Sounds to me there is water getting into your cable. My parents have almost this same problem. Theirs seems to loose sync when it rains but it's only a 1.5M express. It also gave static on POTS.
My guess is if you are the only one with this problem, it's in the feed to you residence and not the main trunk. That line is still their responsability.
My lines are all buried, so I don't have this problem. |

Clip the actual rant and post it in the "Rants, Raves, and Praises" forum. Save the questions for this forum.
Voice line problems can kill DSL; and getting voice techs to handle the issue can fix DSL problems without involving DSL tech support (personal experience).
If the rain alters the line stats significantly, dropping back to 3MB service might alleviate some issues. When you increase speed, you trade some of your noise margin for the extra speed; so you would get some of that back at the lower speed.
OTOH, you would be masking an underlying problem, which probably could only get worse over time, until it overtakes your lower speed profile, and things start acting up again.
I suppose you could get your line stats while it is raining, and when things are dry. Compare the difference. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| reply to DragonFire I had a similar problem many moons ago...in the Heights area of Houston.
The phone line coming to my house was overhead and came into a junction box on the side of my house near the roof.
The box had a cracked at some point and water would get in any time it rained. It wouldn't fill up...but inside would get wet. My phone still worked but it provided enough interference to knock out my dsl connection.
An electrician friend of mine noticed it after a month of neck aches from being on hold and getting nothing accomplished from SWBell. After he replaced the box the problem went away. |

| reply to DragonFire I am having the same problems (in Houston). Same frustrations with (lack of) support from AT&T. I'm impressed you even got to talk to a manager. Managers are never available, but will always call me back... I have never received a call from an AT&T manager or anyone else interested to resolve a problem. |

On a nice sunny day my line of roughly 6K feet to a RT will hold my 6016/768 synce with avg stats of [SN Margin]= 14.5, [Line Attenuation] = Always 33.5 or 34, My CRC error rate is about 100/week. It will stay like this till really good rain and with in 5 mins of the rain starting my SN margin will drop from 14.5 (AVG) to 6, to 2, to no synce and will remain this way till it starts to dry up outside |

| reply to DragonFire Have you ever tried going off hook with your phone when it is raining after your DSL is out? Just wondering here if the moisture is causing a high-open on your line during the rain.
Maybe even ring your own number to really burn through any moisture in the splices. |

| reply to DragonFire Here is my similar rant....
Funny reducing speed seems to be their answer for everything. I recently just lost connection. A call to ASI said no signal and they would have someone out.
Before the tech got here the signal came back, so the tech checked everything outside and called and said what is the problem I see all as OK. I told him it had come back up.
Then it went back down, so I called again. This time another person told me I was to fast for my line and suggested dropping or restricting the line to 4 megs for stability.
I said how rediculous, since I had had no issues with speed for years and when they sold it to me I was told I was 7400 feet to station.
Anyway I said no and dropped another service ticket, except this time they told me it would be 3 days before they could get out.
Meanwhile, yes it came back up and my demand for a quicker visit had only left a promise to sheck with the peverbial supervisor. Sevearl DAYS past, I got a call and was told they could not accomadate an earlier appointment and I would have to wait!
This is what $100 a month gets you!
Go figure! |
