[Newsgroups] Why do people upload to newsgroups?

Why do people upload to newsgroups (movies, music, software, etc.)? What's in it for them?

In short, I like to give back to the "community" that has helped me. Depending on the group, you are helping others who also enjoy the group or share your common interest.

I think thats what the "rookies" who are coming from the torrent and limewire scene don't get. They realize they can just leech so they run with it. It also takes a fair amount of tiem to prepare certain posts for posting, so there has to be some dedication there as well.

Your upload divided by xx people or a commercial servers bandwidth divided by xx people. No doubt better speed and retention. In my book newsgroups will always be better then torrents.

1) helping out and 2) getting the latest releases first (which was a bigger deal 5+ years ago when generally speaking the average speeds were relatively slower)

Wasn't sure why they do it but I did realize a good amount of uploading is not from the US. It is from other countries.

Uploading by US users is risky with copyrights and all. Our courts are so pro-business. Other nations have more of a balance between business and personal use, like in Europe. You'll find a lot of uploading is done by Brazilians and European nations that aren't predominantly pro-business.

Usenet release groups that deal in recent content that the
MAFIAA or software industry has in their sights are very
unlikely to try and post from US servers/providers due to
the DMCA.

They will not only use servers in Europe and elsewhere where
there is no DMCA, but may also attempt to foil the cartels'
enforcers further by using anonymous remailers.

Even then, posts still get taken down, only to be posted
again. This happened with Return Of The King when it first
got onto Usenet, IIRC.

Well, yeah, that's what I was getting at in »Re: [Newsgroups]Is highwinds the central point to attack usenet?

What prevents the AA's from bombarding every mainstream commercial Usenet provider with streams of automated DMCA takedown requests?
