Re: MLPPP on WRT54G/Tomato, progress report (with download)

said by jkreissl :

Do any of you network gurus know if mlp is possible with a single line on the speedtouch 546?
Yes and no. The speedtouch its-self can't do it. However if you put it in bridge mode and your router/the OS of the system connecting into the 546 supports MLPPP, then yes, you can do it using a single line and the 546.

@rogers.com

The 546 is a modem/router and the OS is XP

In short: no.
There's a "But", however there are drawbacks.

So i am better off abandoning the router functions that I paid extra for and buy a wrt54?

All DSL modems these days can act as routers. The cheaper 516 can, as can the 546 you purchased.

All the 546 adds over the 516 is an integrated switch. If you use XP for multilink (can be done with extra software), which I wouldn't recommend, you would still need those switch ports.

Admittedly, if you bought a WRT, it would have its own switch.

EDIT: On another note, the latest build has passed QA and will be released some time later tonight (probably 10 or 11 PM)

Sorry for my ignorance, this is all Greek to me but, they both have an integrated switch. So is the issue something in the firmware of the 546?

The 516/546 doesn't have open-source firmware; we can't modify it to support this.

We have modified the Tomato firmware supported by various routers (including some of Linksys' WRT series) to support MLPPP, and will be releasing the firmware tonight.

You're not required to purchase a WRT router (if you do, make sure you get a WRT54GL, the L is important), it's just (going to be) by far the easiest way to get this working.

I read that the L is the Linux version. This will not affect the functionality or ability to access it with XP?

Also I assume it would need to be version 1.1.

No, the Linux is only for the router's internal OS. You can access it from any Operating System be it Windows, Mac, Linux, etc...

The linux version WRT54GL is better then the standard WRT54G as the firmware (based on Linux) is more stable. My WRT54G v8 sucked (as do all WRT54G versions greater than v4). DNS didn't work properly and DDNS only worked 30% of the time. I switched to a WRT54G v2 (my dad had one) and flashed with Tomato firmware (then Guspaz and DSL_Ricer's firmware) and it is far better than the stock Linksys firmware by far.

Ok, can I please get a summary of what hardware I need.

I have a Speedtouch 510 dsl modem, a D-Link DI 604 router and DI-524 set up as a wireless access point - don't ask, I got it working that way and just well left alone. I am presently on Magma (Primus), I plan to move to Teksavvy soon.

I think that the Speedtouch 510 is locked in some way, I don't know how/if it can be put into bridge mode. What dsl modem should I buy to replace the 510?

I am guessing that I need a new dsl modem and a WRT54GL router. Since I only need 3 wired enet ports (plus 802.11b/g wireless) I don't think that I need either of my D-Link devices any more.

Initially, I will use one DSL line, but may add a second dry dsl line later. What extra would I need for this - just a second DSL router?

I would suggest you get a Speedtouch 516 used by lots of guys here and a WRT54GL wireless router. That would take care of it all. If you upgrade to a second line in the future, you'd need a second modem and the modded Tomato firmware from Guspaz and DSL_Ricer found here: »MLPPP on WRT54G/Tomato, progress report (with download).

For a single-line setup you require only a DSL modem and a compatible router (all testing done on WRT54GL).

For a dual-line setup, you require only an additional DSL modem.

Thanks, I have ordered a 516 and WRT54GL from NCIX and look forward to this.

You don't necessarily need the 516, the 510 may be able to be put in bridged mode...

@teksavvy.com

If the DI 604 is the one that has the user login/password, then the 510 would already been in bridge mode.

Quite possibly, but I bought it from Magma when they still existed. The 510 does not answer to any ip addresses I have tried and I recall Magma telling me it was pre-configured.

The guys at Magma are long gone and I have yet to ever get through to Primus CS. I have had my money's worth out of this modem and figure it is time to get one that I can control. Once I get the 516 working then I guess I can try resetting the 510 to its factory settings, maybe I can use it for a second dry dsl line.

We were typing at the same time ... If that 510 doesn't have to be returned to Primus, you could try it out on Teksavvy as Guspaz suggested. It's only ADSL but will work fine on Teksavvy's current set-up as long as it's bridged. If speeds are ever increased to ADSL 2+ you'd need a newer modem though. But who knows if/when that will happen.

Oh. Yes, you are right, and that is probably why I can't raise it on an IP address.

Ah well, I guess I can use it for a second dry DSL line.

Thanks.

If speed ever goes to ADSL2+, then the router itself might not have enough speed for MLPPP. On the other hand, you might not need MLPPP.
