Someone who has ATT might want to chime in and advise the OP if he goes through ATT to get a refurb what/if any possibility of loosing his grandfathered plan.

They should be able to keep the plan. The last two times I upgraded I had a regional plan that was not offered anymore and they had no problems leaving it that way. I only recently changed the plan because I needed more minutes.
