Re: [XP Pro] Updates Fail after Fresh Install and XP SP3 Loaded

Just to let everyone know, I used bcastner's advice and followed the fix in this MS KB posting;

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
»support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Thanks again!

Bill, maybe I'm dense, but how come I have the 3.0 updater when I do a clean install of XP Pro SP3--no slipstream? I never use the automatic updates, only the manual updates. They all install fine.

I recently installed XP SP2 on 3 different PCs.

After installation of the OS and drivers, I proceeded to Windows Update. I let WU update itself, but NOT install SP3 when given the choice. At some point during this process I was prompted to install the 3.1 installer which I allowed. After which, I installed SP3 from the standalone download. IE7 was installed after SP3 from a standalone download too. From that point forward no problems with Windows Update or installing new/old software and hardware. Including .net 1.1 & 2.0 and all it's patches.

You know now that I think about it that's how I got the 3.1 updater. It installs from the update site before anything else.

Many thanks!

This fixed my problem (note that you have a filename wrong in your instructions - the filename is wups2.dll not wup2.dll)

It should read:

regsvr32 "%windir%\system32\wupS2.dll"

You are correct, and my bad typo.

Fortunately, it is clarified by the linked KB article, and quite honestly unlikely to be the predominant factor, although I most certainly wish I had gotten it right.

Best regards,
Bill Castner

Outstanding. I had the same problems running Windows Update after installing SP3 on XP. Your suggestion was right on target! Thanks.

Istalled Windows Pro via a SP2 disk, I was prompted for Sp3 first then nothing else would install just download

followed the instructions and resolved the issues

bcastner and respect root, thanks. I flattened my xp mce box for new mobo, ram and tuner and reinstalled twice (my quick computer like mind not grasping this didn't happen until after I installed SP3), each time same thing. The MCSE after my name takes another blow....

Thank you, bcastner! I've been having to manually install all updates since I put SP3 on. That was quite an annoyance...
