Fluctuating Signal Again -DC (Cablecards in TiVo)

Ever since they've been launched I’ve been having reception and pixilation issues on 2 of my 20+ HD channels on my Series 3 HD Tivo which has 2 Cablecards installed. WDCA HD (189) and Discovery HD (184) are have nearly constant pixelation and frequent freeezes (every 15 secs or so).

All wires/splitters have been checked (and swapped), with no success. I actually have an HD box hooked up to the same TV, and those channels appear to be working fine through that box (which comes out of the same cable split).

The Series 3 TiVo has a feature where you can look and listen to a ‘signal strength’ meter. On all of the channels it’s a steady high number that fluctuates by 1 or 2 points. On the two channels that are having the issue, the meter shows 20-60 point swings.

Since both cards have the same problem (and are working on the other 18+ HD channels), I don’t think the cards went bad.

I have a service call scheduled, but I doubt that it will solve this problem. Any ideas…or can one of the RCN contributors here please look into this issue?

I had this problem during a previoius launch as well.

i do not have rcn as my tv provider but based on your findings i would say the problem is with your tivo. obviously the card itself works since all other channels are fine. the tuners in tivo units are not as good as a cable company issued box be it scientific atlanta or motorola.

But I've had this exact problem before, and it was solved by the cable company.

For what it's worth, I have a comparable problem with a Series 2 non-HD two-tuner TIVO box.

One input into the box is the direct coax from RCN. The other input is the RCA jacks from my cable box.

If I instruct the TIVO to use the coax for Channel 4 (NBC), one of the tuners brings in a very poor picture. The other tuner brings in a sharp picture. There is no reason that one tuner should work better than another as the video source is the same for each. My "fix" is to direct the TIVO to use the cable box/RCA jacks as the source for Channel 4. Doing that brings in a sharp picture for Channel 4 on both tuners.

I'm fairly sure the problem is the TIVO unit since I have another 2-tuner TIVO box that only gets a signal from a coax and has no such problem.

I appreciate your efforts to help but the Series 3 HD uses CableCARDs, so our problems are not similar.

And as I said in a previous post, I had this exact problem before, went through the runaround with the tech staff, which eventually identified the problem in the card programming, not the cards themselves nor my TiVo.

And the cable companies are legally bound (thank you you telecom act of 1996) to provide functional CableCARDs. So I won't be going away assuming something is wrong with my TiVo.
