Re: SD signal on a HDTV

Disclaimer: TV picture quality/viewing is very subjective.

That being said, I currently have and SD box providing signal via component cables to a 12 year old 35 in. diag. CRT monitor. I sit about 10 feet away from the TV at all times. In my opinion, the picture quality is superb.

I also have an HD box and a 42 in. Sanyo lcd hdtv in my bedroom. I have the TV setup to do the "stretch" of the 4:3 SD signal to fill the 16:9 screen from edge to edge.

If I get within about 4 feet of the TV I can see very noticeable blocking, smearing or artifacting, whatever you want to call it. However, once again I'm usually watching it while laying in bed which again is about 10 to 12 feet away from my eyes to the screen and the picture is reasonable, not as good as the CRT but I can live with it.

In short, If you DO NOT stretch the 4:3 aspect ratio on your HDTV, your SD picture quality should be just as good as the CRT picture quality.

YMMV

The sd boxes don't have component(red green blue + red and white for audio), They do have S-video, its better than composite(yellow red white).

If you get a tv thats sized for the room sd looks decent, although if you get a larger tv you will notice the difference in quality as the picture is blown up bigger.

With your test dvd player make sure the store dosen't have it hooked up with hdmi or component cables as they provide better quality than standard def.
