Re: Can I install Linux over xp.....

Yes, Linux can be installed over Windows (and in that order too, since windows doesn't like co-habitating with Linux. However, the other posters are right, linux will have issues reading the encrypted files from Windows. Also remember, any files that are saved to Linux can't be read by Windows since it cant read the Linux FS (whatever one you choose)

Except for encrypted - Three Ways To Access Linux Partitions (ext2/ext3) From Windows On Dual-Boot Systems
quote:
If you have a dual-boot Windows/Linux system, you probably know this problem: you can access files from your Windows installation while you are in Linux, but not the other way round. This tutorial shows three ways how you can access your Linux partitions (with ext2 or ext3 filesystem) from within Windows: Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and the Ext2 Installable File System For Windows. While the first two provide read-only access, the Ext2 Installable File System For Windows can be used for read and write operations.

I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!
Edit: Just found Tools to access Linux Partitions from Windows that discusses 'ReiserDriver' in addition to the 3 other methods.

ReiserDriver is an Installable File System Driver (IFSD), used to easily (and natively!) read ReiserFS disk partitions under Microsoft Windows (2K/XP) by allowing ReiserFS partitions to appear as additional disks to the Windows operating system.

You're welcome. I found it interesting, too.

I just installed the free DiskInternals Linux Reader into XP.

Installation was simple. When opened it automagically scans the HDD and locates all Linux partitions. It was easy to browse ext3 partitions and copy several files into XP with no trouble.

This simplifies file sharing between openSUSE and WinXP. A small dedicated Fat32 partition that was created specifically for this purpose is now no longer necessary.

I prefer that DiskInternals Linux Reader is read only. I'm not interested in granting Microsoft write access to anything Linux on my box.

Thank you for prompting me to research this.
