Dish offers a LOT of international programming compared to DTV...

But as to FTA... maybe from the east coast... but that is a REAL streatch low angle sighting (and large steerible dish for multiple) from SF/west coast.

I'll echo what Hayward said, and remind you that the Earth is still ROUND, so hitting Euro birds from the West Coast is impossible. I can tell ya that it's a trick on the East Coast, too, unless you're at a really high altitude and have an un-obstructed E/SE horizon.

Plus the factor that the are not omni directional, even if degined for national coverages they have a concentrated semi directional "footprint"

For instance in KW we are so far south, that I am actually looking much more straight UP (less atmosphere) in fact most of the way to the upper dish elevation setting limit, but my signal strenght is far lower than those in say GA as I am very close to the edge of the "footprint" intented to hit the main body of the US, the the strongest signal.

Conversely those farther north see longer severe storm interference and could be one miles away they aren't even directly experiencing, just passing over, as they are looking more sidways through the atmosphere. Here it is rarely more than a couple of minutes as the tall thunderhead blows over, looking more straight up, despite the lower signal strength. (We are ~600 mi farther south than the rest of even the southern US.)

From SF you could probably get Mex and some So Am, and Canadian birds maybe but forget Europe FTA.

In fact I'd bet little of DISH's Intl programming is being directly received at the CO integration center... but multi sat earth bounced relayed to them. Though in CO they do have the advatage of elevation and HUGE high gain dishes.

A sort of funny ancedote... was at a beach bar with a wide sky view and it was like monsoon pouring rain and someone commented that the Sat TV was still working... well the storm was coming from the east and we sat sight almost directly SW.

Just kidding sizing up how fast it came on and direction, I said signal will be gone in 5 min, and last about 2 min.

Had them check when it did happen... it was just about 5 min, and did last about 2min, and the rain had completely stopped already, but just getting into the sat sight path.

More than you ever wanted to know about FTA can be found here.

BTW if you have the room for a big dish there are tons of free programming from around the world on birds that can be received here in the U.S. not to mention all of the other direct feeds that are in the open on C and Ku band.

Still VERY unlikely you are going to see the Europeans from west coast... SF, especially if below even the city and surrounding hills.

A feat even from the east coast.

No need to most of all the EU FTA's are also up on transponders on birds that cover the conus quite well however they are not highpower transponders requiring greater gain on the receive end = big dish.

Also on scattered on MULTIPLE birds so a big STEERABLE dish as well. (like the old 10ft+ C band dishes, now zonning banned in many urban/suburban areas, since the advent of the small DBS dishes) Unless maybe you are interested in a specific channel or those on a single bird.

PS if any wonder.... conus.... ConUS... Cont. US... AKA lower 48.
