anon : Not sure exactly what's going on here. In your "woman conned" article it is keying on the sentence "Pierce's computer screen name was among the information stored on the cell phone".
dmp : I've had several emails this morning that won't send. I played around with the wording of them and find that if I take out several sentences they will finally send. Anyhow, I wonder if someone could test this by copying and pasting the below into your email account and see if you can send it to yourself and report back. (The offending email wording is from a Des Moines Register article I was trying to send to my wife. I sent it in plain text so there was no hidden formatting and it will not leave the Hughes server for me.) Thanks! (ummm... the woman was not very smart... :) )
------------------------------------------------

Woman conned out of $4,200

BY TOM ALEX • REGISTER STAFF WRITER • MAY 6, 2008

A Des Moines woman who uses a telecommunications device for the deaf lost about $4,200 in a scam that authorities say will be nearly impossible to counteract.

Police said Linda Pierce, 52, learned through an e-mail that she had won $100,000 in a "deaf persons lotto." She wired money to Nigeria almost daily between April 21 and last Wednesday. By that time, she'd seen no winnings.

Then on Wednesday, Pierce received a message saying that her money was in an airplane that was circling Des Moines and that she needed to send $550 more for a landing fee tax.

Police took a report from her at the Des Moines airport. Authorities said Pierce showed them the e-mails, and officers determined that the lotto was a scam.

"It's the very worst case of a scam artist targeting the most vulnerable people in the community," said Chris Coleman, Better Business Bureau of Greater Iowa president.

A friend of Pierce who lives in Illinois had her cell phone stolen recently. Pierce's computer screen name was among the information stored on the cell phone.

"At last I found this was a scam when I went to the airport to meet the private jet to pick up $100,000. But nothing," Pierce said.

The telecommunications device for the deaf is used by many Des Moines residents, Coleman said.

"Sometimes conversations use a third party, which is sometimes a machine and a computer that translates voice into type and type into voice," he said. "Some do use people. You would hope an interpreter would provide some level of advice, but in some cases they are restricted from doing that."

When a caller has information about the person being called, as was the case with Pierce's caller, there is a tendency to believe the call is legitimate, Coleman said.

Bob Brammer, spokesman for the Iowa attorney general's office, said Nigerian scams come in various forms. Many involve counterfeit checks. Some involve fees paid to collect on bogus contests.

"I've never heard of paying landing fees, but the rest of it we've seen for decades," Brammer said. "Very few of these are solved. When people wire money and it's a scam, they've pretty much wired it down a rat hole."

Organizations for the deaf issue warnings about scams as they are reported, said Kathryn Baumann-Reese, administrator of the Deaf Services Commission of Iowa. "But the scams keep changing," she said.

The Better Business Bureau says anyone who encounters a suspected scam should contact the bureau at 243-8137, (800) 222-1600 or iowa.bbb.org.

--
HN7000S-RoofMount/ Dell1.8P4-WinXP/ SP2-IE7x-2GBRAM/ NOW 93W-1086 WAS SatMex5-1270MHz
