RHEL Upgrade

Is there any way I can do an upgrade of RHEL3 to 4 in-place on a running system? I'm having a hell of a time compliling kernel modules so I figured I might as well upgrade. I also created a circular symlink I can't delete!

I think if you boot up from RHEL4 cd you get an option to upgrade so you shouldnt have many problems...

About your link, maybe you cant remove it becuase it is being used by a program...? What error do you get when you try to remove it..? "access denied..?

The only supported upgrade is a CD-based upgrade, though I've heard courageous stories of in-place upgrades that have succeeded more or less.

In-place upgrades using Fedora are pretty smooth. I went from FC3 or 4 (don't remember which) to FC6 on a colo server in a PoP halfway around the world once.

There are a few gotchas when going from FC6 to FC7/FC8 though.

Interesting article about "pre-upgrade" (in-place upgrade feature) in RH Magazine recently:

Yes, I know that works well for Fedora, but we're talking about RHEL3 to RHEL4 here.... I'm much less convinced of this working.
