Just bite the bullet and do a fresh install or use VISTA (gasp!) ;-)
I'm assuming that your new hardware has available XP drivers although this is not always the case with new Vista machines. In addition, using an OEM Gateway XP disk to install XP on a Dell may not even be possible or activateable (sp?). Its much better when you install a new update, program that you watch how it works for a few days and if things start acting funny you re-write your partition to get rid of it completely, also you don't have to spend hours in forums trying to predict how a particular update will work for you-just try it!
