Neighbours WIFI

Okay, well my neighbours are pretty kind they let me use thier WIFI. However we live in an appartment they live on the 5th floor and I live on the 1st. I found a good hotspot in my apparment and it picked up wifi very fast.

However everyday I have to keep moving the position of my laptop to get a signal why is that so?

The wifi router is already at the 11 channel. I have a copperwire I have read about it but where do I put it on my laptop to boost the wifi signal.

I have a Toshiba Portege M200

Four floors (indoors) is quite a long distance so I think you're doing just fine. They most likely have an omni-directional antenna so the wireless signal is going in all directions. Also, they are many things that can interfere with wireless signals.

If you are directly below them, you are probably near a null in the dipole antenna(s) they use with their router. In any case, you can usually improve performance by using something like an external USB adapter so you can adjust your antenna to get the strongest signal more easily, and maybe put it out by a window to see if that helps. Higain adapters like the Engenius 362ext and the Alfa can improve things quite a bit.

chances are you are picking up the signal reflected off cars in the parking lot. Tell the car owners to stop moving their cars.

See if they will aim an antenna horizontally for you.

easy: Buy a $15 USB WiFi adapter. Like at Fry's or wherever.
Buy a USB extension cable. Cheap.

Disable the WiFi in your laptop. Permanently.

Install the USB WiFi adapter.

Stretch the USB cable so the WiFi adapter is elevated and in a good spot.
