Why not just ask them to tune an SD channel (480i)? This is what I did during my shopping phase. Better yet, if they have an OTA antenna, try to get them to tune an SD broadcast channel - this assures that there is no upconversion outside of the TV.

As for the DVD player, depends on the player. However, I think the source resolution on the DVD is higher than an SD broadcast so that even if the output of the player is 480i, the fact that it is down-converted from a higher resolution might produce an apparent better picture.

As always, what appears best to you is what matters and YMMV.
