It's likely an automated hard limit of some sort in their network management devices(easy to implement) to prevent such abuse to their network and IP addresses, such has been demonstrated in this thread. Time Warner Cable would be wise to have at least some measure to prevent outright abuse of their network and getting excessive amounts of their IPs blocked at major sites(like many Israeli IPs). Another reason someone might reset their IP is not only trolls, but those who do worse things like fraud(even though the logging of ISP gear can track times of assignments of IP addresses). Call it a preemptive measure. The only thing their DHCP servers see are the MAC's on the LAN side of the modem pulling the ip's. These DHCP servers have limited ip pools and unlike your LAN, they cost Time Warner for those limited public addresses. You pulling these ip's with fresh mac's in a limited time frame quickly eats up those available ip's before they can expire regardless of the fact it's the same modem. It's not surprising that pulling 10 within a mere hour caught their attention.

I see. That's unsurprising actually. Your modem's config file limits your communication such that only one MAC (effectively, one machine) can communicate at a time. However, their DHCP server is a separate entity, and isn't informed when you power-cycle the modem. Under normal circumstances your old IP leases will just expire off so they just set a high limit (looks like 10) to prevent someone with a misconfigured modem from running away with all their IPs.

so, at most i changed 10 IPs in 1 hour,
i change mac, unplug modem (only needs a couple seconds not minutes), replug modem.

at the last one, all 4 lights of the modem were on - like normal, but internet wasnt working, so i thought it was either a bad MAC or i screwed up the modem, so then i plugged straight into the computer and changed mac, replug-plug modem - the modem status page would update like normal, but then after a couple seconds it wouldn't connect to the modem at all- windows would report limited connection etc, i tried alternate DNS, more MACs then gaveup called TWC

i just said "oh my internet is not working"

tier 1: unplug modem, restart computer (i just said i was doing it)
tier 2: same , didnt know what tier 1 did...
tier 3: didnt know what anything happend, had to give account info again.
then i tell tier 3: "my internet is not working"
he says: oh hmm, unplug modem, restart everything,
i did it this time,

he says: ok i see your modem etc , oh hmmmm, seems like you pulled 10 IPs...
i'm like "oh hmmm really?"
he says : do you pay for 10 IPs ?
i go "uhm, no, just 1"
he says "so i'm clearing this out..."

Nope not really. I can change the MAC address of my network interface card (not the modem) and it'll cause a new IP to be generated.

You can do the same in Windows. Release the IP, unplug the modem for 5 minutes, change the NIC's MAC address, plug the modem back in...and boom, new IP.

Running a LiveCD essentially does the same. It detects the hardware as being new and requests updated info. I don't know the internals, but it does work.

Anyway, back to the topic of this post. The more I think about it, the more I belive it to be BS. It's not like generating new IPs is taxing their servers. Maybe if you said why you are having so many resets, could be the "system" sees all these re-sets and triggers a fault disconnect.

I have had the same IP# for so long I couldn't tell you the last time it changed without be causing it.

It's that simple. If the ip you have is unused and you renew, it's gonna give it right back.

The only way to get a new ip is to have a brand new MAC address on the CPE side of the modem since this is the only thing Time Warner's DHCP servers see. The modem's docsis mac is only given to the CMTS for authentication. Using a new MAC requires a hard reboot of the modem due partly to the fact that they only allow one ip/machine to be connected and it takes that procedure to clear the existing MAC from the modem.

All quite simple really. And no, I've never heard of TWC blocking you for 'too many ip resets'. Though if it's too excessive, it's certainly possible. Not SURE if they have policy for this, but it's not unthinkable.

Also, qweens: I sure hope you do not do that kind of thing on a daily basis. It's people like you with that attitude that make it difficult not only for site administrators, but visitors as well. Why not take a little less of a nasty attitude and take part in healthy flameless debates like most?
