| [ Extreme] Upgrade to Extreme Plus - is it worth it?
Currently my service level is Extreme.
I am thinking about upgrading to Extreme Plus. The download speed advertised is almost twice the speed I am using now.
The questions are, is it worth it? Do you actually see a difference in the download times?
Is it worth the money since upgrading would cost twice as much? Would I have to switch modems? Any other hardware?

So you should see improved download times of 25 to 30%.
Only you can decide if that is worth nearly twice the cost. |

Thanks sbrook for your comments! I talked to a Rogers rep this morning who told me how fast Extreme Plus is. OK its fast! I am assuming that one sees the greater speed when downloading large files like movies & music. What about general surfing? Are web pages including images downloaded faster? I know they are probably dumb questions but I had to ask.

| As long as the source can send the data to you and the path to you over the net is fast, they everything you do online will be faster ... surfing, downloading ... you name it, it's faster.
It's rare though for anyone to see the full 18Mbps advertised to even Rogers speedtest. 13 to 16 seems to be the norm.
I love speed, even though I download/upload very little. When I've been on corporate nets, I find that there are too many other factors once you get above 10Mbps to make the additional cost worth it. But as I say, I'm not a major downloader. |

Personally I dont see the extra $40/month as worth it, yes you get a faster download speed but the fact that the upload isnt any faster as well you are capped at the same level as the extreme package for usage I dont see the value to make the $40/month worth it.
Now if they were to up the usage and upload then I would reconsider. |

If I can download images, files and movies lets not forget about all the stuff I am going to upload using the Internet faster you better believe that I am going to need a larger allowance. Oh yes did I forget to mention that I am going to need MORE disk storage as well.

OC-768 is a network line with transmission speeds of up to 39,813.12 Mbit/s (payload: 38,486.016 Mbit/s; overhead: 1327.104 Mbit/s). Just incase you didnt know how fast |

more than what you, I and the rest of the people on DSLR make in a year put together probably. OC-768 is fiber backbone line.
Now back to reality here, I would recommend you stay on your extreme package for now and see what kind of packages come out in future and then reconsider. I like you and most others want to d/l as fast as possible but I do also believe in value for money. I initally thought the extreme plus plan sounded awesome and was ready to upgrade to it when I realized how little difference there is for the amount of money Rogers wants. |

I wouldn't bother upgrading for the following reasons:
a) I subscribe to extreme and only 50% of the time will I get anywhere over 800k/s. Connections to websites (aka bbc) is taking three times longer than usual and I suspect this has to do with either i) node being overloaded or ii) their throttling equipment.
b) Your extreme plus speed will probably only be realistically achievable from a select few sources within North America. Don't expect international links to max out your connection.
c) Throttling of pretty much everything is going to downgrade your experience to what you're already getting.
d) Bandwidth is still the same. If it wasn't for the 100gb (now 95gb) cap I receive w/ extreme, I'd probably be considering downgrading to express right about now.
e) I don't foresee the above issues being fixed anytime soon. And of course money is a huge factor.
It's basically just another way to trick us into giving up more of our money. It's not worth it imo since it's kinda like owning a ferrari and being forced to drive it at a 90km/hr speed limit on the gardiner expressway. |

The speeds you may or may not get are probably why rogers does not promote this service. Yes thats correct they dont advertise it. When they do rate and speed increases they show that extreme plus speed on those mail outs. otherwise people wouldn't even know about it other then word of mouth and this forum.
Its somewhat interesting why rogers does not promote this tier. You'd think they would welcome the extra income. shrug |

| It's not promoted because it was introduced as an answer to Bell's Optimax service and other cable co's highest tier offerings. Sort of a "We've got it too, but you have to ask"
They don't really want it, because in many areas, it would result in lots of congestion and slowdowns. |

not really sure why bell advertises anything above 7mbit. My friends tell me they barely achieve 5mbit unless your lucky in most areas. |

It's worth it depending on your situation.
Personally I haven't noticed any throttling of torrents being on 1720 or other random ports.
Basically I take it as a $125 ($99 plus max overage charge) service. For me it's worth it, but I don't really torrent. |
