Switching to DirecTV - record QAM locals with Moto DVR?

I have switched to DirecTV, but locals are not yet available in my area (south of Chicago). I'm looking for a cheap option to be able to DVR shows on my local channels until they are available.

If I cancelled my Comcast cable service (keeping HSI) would I be able to still rent the Motorolla DVR and record QAM? I can't seem to find if it even detects QAM?

It sounds like DirecTV locals should be available later this year - I could handle the $15 fee or whatever it is per month until then.

Thanks

Most areas, you cannot rent a DVR without at least a suscription to digital starter. Some people claimed to have a DVR with limited basic(the $15ish pkg with local channels only).

Check what the price is for HSI with any cable service, and without any cable service. Usually the price is about the same for HSI with limited basic(local channels only)($43 + ~$15) and HSI without any cable service($60)

If you don't need HD, then I suggest a VCR in the interim:) If you want HD, well there isn't really a "cheap" way, you could get a device that records QAM-in-the-clear on your PC, such as the HDHomeRun, or OnAirGT.

If you can get the local channels with an antenna, the E* TR-50 DVR would work great, but it's not out yet.

If he could use an antenna, & he had the DirecTV HD DVR, all he has to do is add the AM21 to his DirecTV DVR & it would do the same thing at no extra charge. (but he didn't tell us WHICH DVR he got... )

Hypo - if you really don't care about "real" local channels on your satellite, you could "move" your service & get ALL the Chicago local channels now. Go to satelliteguys.us & do a search on "moving" & it'll tell you how to do it. I've moved since I've had DirecTV & it's great.
