I'm in the same boat as you; although I needed an industrial strength ERD tool.
Rather than settling for sub-optimal, I virtualize. At the moment I'm using Sun/VirtualBox's solution. It works very well.
I have one client who wants SQL Server so I've setup a Windows 2003 Server virtual machine. My standard virtual machine is Windows XP. I use it primarily to run one of my client's tools along with Office products.
