Most areas, you cannot rent a DVR without at least a suscription to digital starter. Some people claimed to have a DVR with limited basic(the $15ish pkg with local channels only).
Check what the price is for HSI with any cable service, and without any cable service. Usually the price is about the same for HSI with limited basic(local channels only)($43 + ~$15) and HSI without any cable service($60)
If you don't need HD, then I suggest a VCR in the interim:) If you want HD, well there isn't really a "cheap" way, you could get a device that records QAM-in-the-clear on your PC, such as the HDHomeRun, or OnAirGT.
If you can get the local channels with an antenna, the E* TR-50 DVR would work great, but it's not out yet. |

If he could use an antenna, & he had the DirecTV HD DVR, all he has to do is add the AM21 to his DirecTV DVR & it would do the same thing at no extra charge. (but he didn't tell us WHICH DVR he got... )
Hypo - if you really don't care about "real" local channels on your satellite, you could "move" your service & get ALL the Chicago local channels now. Go to satelliteguys.us & do a search on "moving" & it'll tell you how to do it. I've moved since I've had DirecTV & it's great. |
