1 edit | reply to toplevelpot 1. Make sure the XP Home edition has two key updates. Neither of these were made available through Windows Automatic Update Service:
Network Client Update for XP »support.microsoft.com/kb/917021
XP Link-Layer Topology Client »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···85FA34EA
2. As the laptop is using XP Home, it therefore is also using the "Simple File Sharing" security model. That means on the Vista machine you do not want to enable passwword-protected sharing, among other things.
3. With all the above in place, follow what I consider the "Bible" or "Cookbook" for Vista to XP networking: »technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr···037.aspx -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to toplevelpot 2 cudni: no firewalls( i know but, but, but, aww forget it.i have bad habits ), and plain can't see the shared folders under my network places.
2 bcastner: have bookmarked #3; #2 is not applicable as i dont password protect my shared stuff; and #1 might be a problem as i've not checked the validity of my xp install (i use the lappy as a media xtender or qwick browsing outside).
2 lawrence171: when i go online under vista i will check my settings against those and see.
to all thank you -- waiting for sig-spiration |

1 edit | The (Vista) firewall should have nothing to do with it. Even if its enabled, Vista's Network Sharing Center should properly config. it to work.
- Appended "(Vista)" between "the" and "firewall" to avoid confusion. Thanks, bcastner, for pointing it out. |

I can think of many, many firewall products where this claim is absolutely untrue. It most certainly is not true a capability enabled by default under Vista. You would have to be using a firewall that is UPnP compliant; you would have to enable this non-default feature; and you would have to manually configure Vista to enable UPnP.
The single case that Vista makes an automatic exception under a firewall for networking is with its own native firewall. However, your claim that under Vista the firewall "has nothing to do" with network sharing port and protocol exceptions, as the exceptions would be automatically made by the Visa Network Center, is untrue for every other firewall sold (or available as freeware), and Cudni 's point is perfectly valid. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to toplevelpot I have found when networking xp and vista that you it is so much easier if you change the workgroup name to be the same. By default workgroup name in xp is MSHOME and in vista it is workgroup. When I changed them to be the same sharing files was a breeze. |

Hmmm...I wonder if that is why Vista sees my XP machines easily (doesn't see the 98SE one though) but XP cannot see the Vista machine but sees the other XP machines? I noticed that it was Workgroup in Vista and MSHome in XP of course. I tried clicking on Workgroup in XP a little while ago and crashed everything. I'll never touch Workgroup again in XP. In the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings section of the System window, click Change settings.
On the Computer Name tab of the System Properties dialog box, click Change.
In the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box, type the name of the workgroup being used by the other computers on your network in the same Workgroup, and then click OK. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users
