IPV6 big part of Docsis 3.0 cable modems

Multiple vendors is good:
CableLabs® has awarded certification status for Data over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS®) 3.0 cable modems to Ambit, Arris, Cisco, Motorola for two modems; and SMC.
And IPV6 support also means allowing future multiple devices in the house each with its own IP address. The 3.0 cable modems are also backwards compatible with previous standards allowing easier rollout and cutovers to new standards.

DOCSIS 3.0 is backward compatible with all existing DOCSIS products. Another key element of DOCSIS 3.0 is Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). IPv6 also will allow cable operators to effectively manage the proliferation of devices that are capturing consumer interest, including portable media players, cellular phones, gaming consoles, PDAs and others.
The way I see a rollout going is to upgrade all CMTSs to Docsis 3.0 1st; then area by area rollout of 3.0 cable modems to those buying the faster tiers; and then rollout of 3.0 cable modems to the whole user base.
