1. Make sure the XP Home edition has two key updates. Neither of these were made available through Windows Automatic Update Service:

2. As the laptop is using XP Home, it therefore is also using the "Simple File Sharing" security model. That means on the Vista machine you do not want to enable passwword-protected sharing, among other things.
3. With all the above in place, follow what I consider the "Bible" or "Cookbook" for Vista to XP networking:
