| [XP Pro] XP boots to the please wait screen after SP3
Mr. Castner states that he will try and help those of us that are having problems after installing SP3 so I am taking him up on his offer. I have a custom built AMD machine (built by a local company) and after installing SP3 it states it installed successfully and asks for a reboot. Upon reboot it gets to the part where there is a black screen with the windows xp logo and please wait in smaller letters underneath the logo. At this point the system hangs and will not boot any farther. I do have the intelpmm entry in the registry but have disabled it per posted instructions. I have also disabled automatic restarts and get no error messages it just hangs. I am able to boot into safe mode and use the add remove programs to uninstall SP3 and the system boots fine. I have tried installing in safe mode but with the same result. I spoke with Microsoft technical support yesterday but they could not help and said the issue needs to be escalated to a senior tech and I will get a call back but the call back slots are full for over a week. I am using a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 motherboard and a Matrox millennium P650 video card with the latest drivers from Microsoft update. I have updated two other desktops and one laptop with no problems and this is the only system that is giving me problems. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

did you have an antivirus active while installing?

| Exact same thing happens with my system but after the first hang at the please wait screen I do a hard reset and it just boots to a blank black screen and hangs indefinitely then after another hard reboot I get windows did not load properly and am given the options for booting into safe mode which works. |
|
Sentinel Premium join:2001-02-07 Florida | After I did a hard reset mine *seemed* to be fine. So far those PCs *appear* to be running fine so I am assuming that the install went OK. |

| I just checked the svcpack.log files on my other three computers where the install of SP3 went find and they are loaded with error messages and failed messages but all three seem to be working fine so far. I did a True Image restore on the system where it will not boot after the SP3 install so I dont have access to the svcpack.log file to check it more closely. I will have to try the install again later and see what the file says but right now I need this system operational as it is my main work computer. |

| reply to BioHazzard It would have been a consideration to have IM's me that you had created this thread. While I am willing to help anyone, I am not willing to read every new thread on the entire Board to discover who is requesting help.
SP3 is installed. No matter how many messages you see in the svpack.LOG, if at the end of the installation Service Pack 3 does not uninstall itself automatically the Service Pack is installed.
Lets consider what we do know about your problem machine: You can boot to Safe Mode but Normal mode appears to hang. Ask yourself -- what is different between a Safe and a Normal boot?
Obviously, Safe mode loads only a limited set of services, and effectively, no autostarting applications. The other key difference is that Safe Mode does not use the full video adapter driver set or features; Safe Mode only uses the VGA display driver, no matter what features you video board supports. This is the key, I believe, to your problem.
Check with Matrox and see if there are newer video adapter drivers available. (I would not have used Microsoft distributed device drivers for this device, as you have done.) Check with Gigabyte to be sure you have the latest BIOS firmware installed. Your problem description sounds like an ACPI-related issue between your video adapter and the BIOS. Whether the fault lies with the BIOS firmware or the video drivers is impossible for me to say.
And please do not assume that the "Please wait..." message on the first restart after installing XP SP3 means that the computer is frozen. That first restart is one of the most complicated self-configuration periods of the operating system's entire existence. It is not unusual for the first restart to take several minutes before the full Desktop appears and is active. On the first restart, please do not reboot the computer in any hasty fashion believing it to be in a locked up state or frozen -- I wait twenty minutes before considering a reboot.)
Finally, for odd and mysterious reasons, when you retry your first restart after a new installation of Service Pack 3 attempt, have an external USB hard drive or USB pen drive connected to the computer. This appears to help a great deal in cases where ACPI issues are appearing during the first restart, and XP attempts its first PnP enumeratation of all busses.

| Thank you very much for your reply. I apologize for not IMs you as this was my first post and I just joined today, mainly to get your advice as I have seen how you have helped so many others with your knowledge. I will research the sites capabilities further.
I waited about 15 minuets before the reboot at the please wait screen and uninstalled the Microsoft supplied drivers and tried again using only the vga drivers and still got the long wait on the please wait screen but I will install the latest driver from Matrox and try again. I also will check if I have the latest bios, I believe I do but will check. Thank you again for your response. |

| Yes, please check.
One huge advantage Microsft can provide you when you reach technical support is a database that records incidents of other users. So be sure to have the exact model number of your Gitabyte motherboard, and the exact model of your video adapter, and the exact driver set used.
The easiest way to do this is to Start, Run, msinfo32, and either print that display, copy the results to a Notepad file for reference, or have MSINFO32 active when you are reached by Microsoft.
The fastest way to reach Microsoft would likely be an online chat session; if you are in the US or Canada.
Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3). This support for SP3 is valid until April 14, 2009. For more information about this policy, visit the Windows XP Support Lifecycle page located at »support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223. Chat and e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| Well I tried all your suggestions, motherboard bios most recent, installed latest drivers for my Matrox card from their site and tried the install of SP3 again. Still no dice, exact same thing with no error messages. When it gets to the please wait screen (I waited 40 minuets before resetting) the hard drive continues to show activity as though the OS is still loading then eventually stops and the mouse cursor is an hour glass and I am still able to move it so it is not frozen it just seems it cant get past that screen.
I will wait and see what Microsoft comes up with. Thank you again for taking the time and trying to help. I saw on Microsofts Technet forums a few other users have the exact same problem but it does not give their system specs for comparison |

| The logs for Hotfixes, Service Packs, Windows Update and most(not all) things Windows is found in %WINDIR%, typically C:\WINDOWS\
The Service Pack Log: \WINDOWS\svcpack.log
Check too (By Date and Time Stamp) the log files that begin with "wu" as they are the Windows Update log files.
There should be a log as well from Windows Installer. But use the "svcpack.log" file as the most informative. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to bcastner While Microsoft may have an advantage with their database you sir have more knowledge about this OS in your little finger then any of the techs that I have spoken with at Microsoft do in their whole body.
I have seen how many people you have helped in just the two days I have been a member here. You are a huge asset to this site and you actions are to be commended. |

Look in your Recycle Bin to see if it remains there. |
