[Speed Problem] Good Enough to Go Back to 3.0?

I upgraded to PRO sometime ago. When I was having problems with a new router I called SBC and a second or third level support guy said my line was too noisy and dropped my download speed to 2.0. Since then, my pair went bad, got a new one, and replaced my eight year old Alcatel 1000 adapter with a Motorola 2210. I've been taking a lot of line drops but the techs say my line is clean. At any rate, do the stats attached look good enough to go back to 3.0. Might as well get everything I'm paying for.

Line 144 of the techreadout page is the 2210 modem's estimate of the maximum speeds it can handle on your line.

So I could go to 5.4kb rx were I willing to pay for it. Am I reading right? Here are lines 140-148

The 2210 thinks your line is solid for the full 3008. Go for it.

My lines been dropping regularly as it has done for the last few Mondays. When I checked the technician log, my current speed dropped to 1.5 from 2.0 and the 144 value is down from 5.4. Does it do it on its own or are the tech's messing with it? I've been leaving messages with them, but they haven't called back since Friday.

Something is wrong with your loop someplace. Notice how your latest attenuation readings (146 Current LATN 52.0 31.0) jumped from what they had been. Unless AT&T's contractors are conditioning the loops in your area and messed up yours, then you have a problem. Your SNR margin (145 Current SNRM 1.0 8.0) has cratered as a result of the the attenuation jump.

It hasn't been raining in your area has it? A lot of times whenever we see jumping attenuation readings (up or down) and big drops in SNR margins and/or train down sync speeds, it is a result of grounded or crossed pairs.

Is your POTS line quiet? If not call 611 and report the noises to them. Otherwise it is time to start a Trouble thread in AT&T Direct: »/forum/sbcdirect. Post a link there to this thread so the techs can see what has happened prior to the current conditions.

Normally I would have you run the DMT tool on your line, but Motorola didn't duplicate the exact same techreadout formatting as the Speedstream modems so the tool doesn't work on a 2210.

Well after a few more outages, it's back up to its previous speed. It hasn't rained in weeks if not months around here. I lost my POTS line to squirrels a while ago and they switched me to a new pair. I had problems before the switch, but they've seemed to have increases since. I've had the techs (by calling 611) out several times and they tell me the line is fine. One was a splicer who was going to make up a new pair before he tested the existing one and found it good. I'll post to the other forum. Thanks for all your help.

Have you verified that your line stats are also bad at your NID?: »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How do I check modem stats, synch rates & speeds at NID - Residential Housin . That would rule out some type of inside wiring problems that would cause you to be charged for a truck roll if they exist.

It's getting late on Monday. The line usually improves considerably in the afternoon. The latest stats are:

140 Current Rate 1984 512
141 Previous Rate 0 0
142 DSL Max Rate - -
143 DSL Min Rate - -
144 Current ATTN DR 5472 960
145 Current SNRM 16.0 16.0
146 Current LATN 47.0 31.0
147 Current SATN - -
148 Current TP 12.7 6.8

I read the description on the procedure and noticed a possible problem being the surge protector. I didn't even know there was a DSL rated protector. I have a power conditioner in the same closet as the DSL adaptor. I can plug it into it to see if it improves the situation. The last time I looked at the power conditioner the input voltage was 126 and out was 119. My power isn't the best. The UPS on the computer will switch on from time to time. I just took two more outages while typing. The latest stats are:

140 Current Rate 1984 512
141 Previous Rate 0 0
142 DSL Max Rate - -
143 DSL Min Rate - -
144 Current ATTN DR 2336 608
145 Current SNRM 6.0 10.0
146 Current LATN 51.0 31.0
147 Current SATN - -
148 Current TP 18.8 11.8

I plugged the DSL Adaptor into my power conditioner and got the following readings:

140 Current Rate 1984 512
141 Previous Rate 0 0
142 DSL Max Rate - -
143 DSL Min Rate - -
144 Current ATTN DR 6336 928
145 Current SNRM 15.0 16.0
146 Current LATN 47.0 30.0
147 Current SATN - -
148 Current TP 7.9 7.4

The uplink speed is the best I've seen so far. I'll wait a few days before before I get hopeful.

The surge protector wasn't it. It was up for about an hour and a half and then took quick two outages. The latest numbers are:

140 Current Rate 1536 512
141 Previous Rate 0 0
142 DSL Max Rate - -
143 DSL Min Rate - -
144 Current ATTN DR 2208 608
145 Current SNRM 6.0 9.0
146 Current LATN 51.0 31.0
147 Current SATN - -
148 Current TP 18.8 11.8

Just lost it trying to post. Now the numbers are:

140 Current Rate 1536 480
141 Previous Rate 0 0
142 DSL Max Rate - -
143 DSL Min Rate - -
144 Current ATTN DR 1536 480
145 Current SNRM 1.0 6.0
146 Current LATN 52.0 31.0
147 Current SATN - -
148 Current TP 18.1 11.8

It's almost fun watching the numbers jump all over the place.

I didn't think the surge suppressor was helping. You aren't running the DSL line through it by any chance? Even the "DSL-rated" phone line protectors have been known to degrade the DSL signal.

I though you meant if the DSL adaptor was plugged into it. I'm too focused on line voltage. No I don't run the DSL line through it.

I just put the adapter in the garage with about a 15 foot cable from the NID to the adaptor. The numbers are now:

140 Current Rate 1984 512
141 Previous Rate 0 0
142 DSL Max Rate - -
143 DSL Min Rate - -
144 Current ATTN DR 7712 928
145 Current SNRM 14.0 16.0
146 Current LATN 47.0 30.0
147 Current SATN - -
148 Current TP 4.8 7.7

I have shorter phone cable if the one I'm using is too long, but I'd have to get a longer ethernet cable to get it closer.

The line from the NID that I have been using is CAT5 about fifty feet long. It has been in for about eight years. The technician didn't like my soldered connections so he replaced them some marine quality connectors. This was several weeks ago.
