| UPS watts, STB, TV
I Wanted to post my UPS loads for those interested in providing UPS, line regulation, etc for their setup(s). Watts measured thru display of an APC BX1300LCD UPS. This may help folks deciding how many watts consumption to shop for in a UPS. Wattage also measured with an APC LS700 to confirm. ymmv. Setup #1 P4pc + QIP6200 + Actiontec Router + 19" lcd + Olevia 527 27" lcd hdtv: combined power draw 210 watt load on a UPS. (During pc boot time, up to 280 watts.)
Setup #2 Samsung 56" DLP/LED light engine, (HL-T5689s), + QIP6416-2:combined power draw was 220 watts. A few other items will be added to this setup like answering machine, wireless phone base, etc. |

3 edits | Don't forget your Battery Backup (BBU) which powers the ONT. I believe the battery life depends on activity - internet uses more than just the phone (which it was designed for).
I have a different philosophy. If the power goes out, you shouldn't be on your PC and should be taking care of the rest of the house.
PC (APC Back-UPS ES 650): Fully loaded AMD64 PC (650 W power supply) + Dell 2407WFP on battery backup. The APC has a USB connection to the PC. When power goes out of regulation or drops, Win XP will perform a controlled shutdown. There's enough warning time to save my files / manage what's needed. You can either have the APC PowerChute application run full-time in the Win XP system tray (task bar near the clock) or just as an automatic service, i.e. run on boot.
Home Theater (APC Back-UPS ES 650): Samsung 67" DLP (HL-R6768W) + DVD player on battery backup. For DLP TV's it's critical to have a battery backup because the lamp's cooling fan needs to run for a few mintutes after power-off. If not, the bulb life is seriously shortened. |

I guess it depends on the event around the power outage.
I still have not done anything about that power suplly although I have the supplies....lazy |

| reply to bt06437 rtcy - I loves my sammy. Had the 5689s ISF calibrated. I was surprised how little power the thing needs. No bulbs in this model either, darn near instant on. I have an older sammy bulb dlp in the bedroom, but its not worthy of UPS'ing.
GeekGirl1 - have not yet decided upon a wattage size for backup for the ONT equipment. As another consideration, the UPS for that will have to go in the garage. Its in Texas and gets hot in the summer, so thats a concern.Prolly around 350-400 watts ought to do it, and not break the bank.
Most of the power disturbances at my local are under 5 min, but there's always the ones that are shorter in time like 500ms to 1000ms that can really jerk things around. Those are the ones I want protection from. |

| reply to rtcy Love my Sammy, but only when the light tunnel mirror stays attached to the tunnel . This is specific to the DLP. Long story short, there's a quality problem with the Samsung DLPs. Next one will be a different brand. Other than that, PQ is fantastic. You can read the trials and tribulations about the Samsung DLP problems over on AVS forum here: »www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre···&page=72 (this is somewhat OT for this thread). Remember that most brands have some sort of problem or another. Meander over to the AVS LCD display forum »www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdis···hp?f=166 and pick your poison. There's an opinion of just about every model you can think of.
bt06437 - Remember that you will need something that's rated for outdoors- humidity, dust (it's Texas...), etc.
I purposely did not put my STB on backup. Reason is that 1)if the power goes out, my STB drops out so I know there's a problem, and 2)it's Verizon's equipment anyway. For me, I want to drop off-line when the power goes out. Also, I want to protect my TV.
The bottom line is that you need to figure out how long you want to run on battery. The longer uptime you want, the larger / heavier (!!) unit and more $$$ you will need. Batteries are heavy. A helpful hint if you do mail order and need to pay shipping.
APC has a calculator that lets you size (they're brand) UPS: »www.apc.com/template/size/apc/index.cfm (enable cookies). You can pick the amount of uptime you want and how much extra power you need for expansion. |
