| [Equipment] Problem adding own cable box.
I have had their HD cable box since they release it (from the single non-dvr version to the current dual tuner). Due to the rising cost of living, I have been evaluating some of the luxuries in my life. $15.95/month is my bill for the usage of the box, and I had a thought, "What if I bought my own box like I did with the cable modem?"
So, I researched and shopped around for a new box, not a used one. Found a seller that carries them (DCT6412) for approx. $200 shipped, and the seller would give me the serial number before purchase to make sure this wasn't stolen or anything. Looked around Insight's website and discovered this »www.insightcom.com/help-cable-fa···#faq6072
Calling my local office; I asked about getting my own box hooked up and they responded with a resounding "NO". By they, I mean a couple of CSRs. I asked why and was told that they do not activate digital boxes other than their own. The box is the same model as theirs and I even directed them to the link I previously mentioned, but got the same response.
Ok, now that I said all of that, I wanted to know has anyone been sucessful in adding their own box to Insight. I understand the whole piracy thing as it is mentioned on their website about needing to verify a box being unaltered, but I can't even get them to consider looking at it. If you just can't add a box, why do they have it listed like you can? Thanks for any response. |

| I've been down this same road. The only box they will allow is one that requires a cable card such as a Tivo. Then you must pay a monthly subscription to Tivo and a buck ot two for the cable card and you end up paying the same amount. An Insight rep told me that there would be boxes coming on the market that could be bought at CC or BB but no one there knows anything about it. |

| reply to braids Unless you buy the box directly from Motorola you will never get to use it. The 64xx has never been released by them (Motorola) as a retail type box. So the short of it is the box you were trying to buy is most likely not a legitimately available STB.

| reply to braids The box was coming from Canada. I was told that he (the seller) got it from Future Shop. I am under the impression that it is sold retail there. That brings up another question now that you mention it compugeek, which addressable boxes can you find retail? |

| Canada is different - they DO sell boxes at retail & cable systems up there will activate them.
Down here is totally different - nobody here sells boxes retail & pretty much NO cable system, including Insight, will activate these, including ones aquired from Canada.
The ONLY boxes you CAN buy retail here & successfully activate, are Tivo boxes w/cablecards, as promike already told you. |

| Actually, the Moto box that you can provide, which the CATV provider WILL activate, is the Motorola DCP-501, which activates as a DCT-2500. So, looks like Paragraph three is missing this tidbit. »broadband.motorola.com/consumers···heet.pdf »broadband.motorola.com/consumers···Products |

| reply to braids I like to thank everyone for their responses. They were all helpful. I found someone who got a new DCP-501 for sale cheap. I am going to run this box by Insight and see what they say. I would love to get a HD box, but that is the way it goes. Thanks again everyone. If anyone else has any suggestion please don't hesitate to reply. |

You would have been "able" to activate that box, but since the FCC has passed the "rule" that all boxes must have "separate" security after 7/1/07 you're hosed. All the DCT based boxes have embedded security and no box with embedded security can be "installed" after that date unless it was previously installed in the field.
If you can find a DCH you're golden, those have separate security and actually have cablecards in them.
