Time Warner has loads more fiber in the system than Verizon. Verizon is saying they will wire by 2014 which is funny cause in that time frame, Time Warner can get to the same level that Verizon is on or better with lower capital overhead expenses.

I have seen the most upgrades from Time Warner cable than any other carrier in the marketplace especially in recent months. The system is likely going to be ready for large speed upgrades later this year.

I will have docsis 3.0 from Time Warner Cable way before I have FIOS and I will be able to get similar speeds as well as they ramp the service up. No need to wait for TV franchise cause I have CATV already. Its all here right now.

RCN is the bottom feeder in the marketplace. Time Warner Cable for cablemodem is the only way to go now. And with docsis 3.0 it will be FAST.

Verizon is all talk, they havent laid one fiber line here and they wont. Even by 2014 I dont expect FIOS to be here.

Run up to 2014:

I will have no FIOS but will have superfast wireless from Clearwire and Time Warner Cable available and will likely be able to get a combo deal for true convergence.

With Clearwire, I think Time Warner Cable is a better pipeline than FIOS.

I will have Time Warner Cablemodem running Docsis 3.0 OR BETTER, and a handheld and notebook running WiMax over Clearwire and can converge with it as well.

Verizon got screwed here cause they got the 700mhz spectrum. 2.5 Clearwire spectrum is far superior.

Clearwire/Time Warner Cable with single billing is for me.

FIOS aint even in the running for me anymore. Time Warner has secured me as a customer for life. Both the wired and wireless will scale up in speed over time.

FIOS has really nothing to offer now since new equipment will make Time Warner cable have the same speeds as Verizon's best GPON. The top Verizon speed offering can be met with Time Warner Cable over Docsis 3.0. Verizon doesn't have anything really superior right now.

Case in point:

Verizon FIOS is 10/2, 20/5, 20/20 and 50/20. From $48 to $95 for Internet alone.

Time Warner Cable speeds with Docsis 3.0 will hit the sweet spot, a better mix of pricing and convergence.

Docsis 3.0 can offer 100Mbps speeds.

Why would I want FIOS? I don't.

Docsis 3.0 is what I want with convergence on Clearwire. The Clearwire merger just proved to me how Im sticking to Time Warner Cable.

This topic was to discuss Verizon for FIOS for 2014 and to that, I say that I find it HIGHLY unlikely that Verizon will have FIOS here by that time period. But even if it did I would still be on Time Warner. There is no reason to switch. A combination of inhome residential and wimax will make me 100% wired. I bet I will be using the wimax portion more than the wired portion to boot.

Docsis 3.0 and wimax will fill all my needs. The reason Docsis 3.0 is still good is that for the home you still want wired because it can hook you up to higher peformance computing since a desktop is more powerful and can get slightly faster speeds. However since your not using it as much, a fiber optic based home connection really doesn't make much sense over a decently fast hybrid fiber coaxial connection and docsis 3.0 turns the system to its finest hour. 100Mbps downstream is doable over Docsis 3.0. Even 1Gbps over Cisco with Docsis 3.0 has been trialed and proven to work. So all this huff and puff that FIOS is better than Time Warner Cable is all BS marketting drivel. Both systems for the most part can be scalable to similar speed sets. Time Warner has the convergence advantage and the time to market advantage making it for me a win win.

I actually use CATV from RCN cause of an inbuilding contract. However I dont know how long that relationship will last. So I can just switch the TV component over to Time Warner.

With FIOS you don't even have a franchise agreement in place for the TV side as well. So what does this mean? It means that those who subscribe right now to Time Warner in NYC get the whole package and just have to swap a modem out to Docsis 3.0 which is a simple procedure in the future. For those who subscribed to FIOS, they would not be able to get the TV side and would have to schedule another home install for the service and would have to subscribe to Time Warner Cable or a DISH provider if they wanted CATV to begin with.

Leaving Time Warner as best of breed with Docsis 3.0. When I swap out my Docsis modem and get my Modem shipped to me from Clearwire after the merger takes place I will be very happy indeed.

Time Warner is turning into a really great ship which will be turning great when Time Warner Cable is fully split off.

This part is entirely false and is what Verizon marketting wants you to believe. FIOS right now top speed offering is 50/20Mbps. Guess what, the Docsis 3.0 provider is offering 100Mbps right now while FIOS is only selling 50Mbps. Starhub in Singapore using pre docsis 3.0 gear mind you is selling 100Mbps right now. Capability wise, Docsis 3.0 with channel bonding is on par with GPON all around. Cisco got 1Gbps over Docsis 3.0.

Repeating a lie and propagating it is exactly what Verizon wants others to do. As soon as docsis 3.0 comes out from providers officially the name of the game will change and the cable companies will start seeing some great reviews.

Just ask Cisco software architect Alon Bernstein who got 1Gbps over Docsis 3.0.

Docsis 3.0 vs GPON is essentially different delivery mechanisms and working standards. Verizon executives have spent tons of money on marketting the fact that GPON is better. But alas this is not the case. The incumbent cable companies have spent money collaborative on the Docsis 3.0 standard. Is one better than the other assuming same speed tiers offered? Not at all.

Think of Time Warner and Verizon as two seperate competitors whereas each infrastructure can be just as good as each other and in fact will be. One will choose based on price, and speed and convergence options.

Cisco software architect Alon Bernstein, in a presentation at the SCTE's Emerging Technologies conference showed a screen shot of a command-line interface for a cable modem delivering upstream throughput of 974,723,228 bits per second. Tell me with speeds reaching this over cable modem how the cable carriers like Time Warner are at a disadvantage?

That speed is way more powerful than Ill ever use even if somehow GPON exceeded it in speed. :P

Remember Cable networks are fiber optics and have their own video headend already there as well as existing billing and provisioning systems. So the buildout expense for the cable carriers to match Verizon neck and neck of anything they need to upgrade to comes to much less.

Theres no winner here. Competition is good for all of us and it means best of breed networks amongst 2 competing pipelines.

Time Warner as of today is an engineering driven company. With Verizon its still heavily marketting dependent even though FIOS seems to want to make it engineering based.

Choice: 100Mbps over Time Warner Cable or Verizon FIOS at 50Mbps. $100 for Time Warner Cable, $150 for FIOS.

FIOS slower and higher price premium. Would you get FIOS?

Even if it was 50Mbps vs 50Mbps.... there is no advantage to choosing one plant over the other............
