For example, IE7 cannot be installed on Windows 2000.
April 14th, 2009 is when Windows XP moves from Mainstream Support into Extended support. After that time no new features will be released for XP, only security fixes.

It is then scheduled to stay in the Extended Support phase for 5 years until April 8th, 2014 during which time security features will be released. ...
One would be wise to be very cautious about what they read into "Extended Support until April 8th, 2014." The XP security fixes during that period will not be comprehensive, particularly as time goes by, if previous obsoleting OSs are any indication of what MS will do. (And as those of us who've lived through such days can attest.) Only "critical" security fixes will then get released for XP... and the kinds of problems which fall within that definition in MS's sole opinion will diminish as time passes under Extended Support. Near the end of Extended Support, MS may even simply decline to fix a critical problem or two, as being too intimately involved with an obsoleting architecture to justify the 'massive effort' to fix it.

XP users may discover afresh that if a security hole exploit depends on the user navigating to a given malware-containing website, that may be considered a less-than-critical flaw for XP since the user can (in theory) 'simply' avoid going to such a website. Which completely ignores, of course, the consequences of involuntarily redirects, ad-page referrals, etc. If it's deemed less-than-critical by MS in their opinion, then no security patch will be forthcoming from them.

So realize that Windows Updates after April 2009 will not be of the nature and numbers one currently experiences, even for security fixes... and the remaining XP support 'user experience' is likely to diminish over time as the end of Extended Support approaches.
--
If God wanted us to work with electrons, He'd make them big enough to see...

Mele20 : Thanks! I had discovered Personalization when I was akwardly using the mouse right handed and I saw in Personalization how to change the DPI and the mouse to left handed. I didn't scroll back upward to see Windows Color and Appearance. I looked in Theme and switched to classic but I didn't see that advanced button I wanted for display properties. Its up in Color and Appearance which makes sense. I just didn't scroll back up to see that. Duh.

Now I have the font and all those advanced items for display set the way I want them, I am much happier. I can read everything very easily now and the text under the desktop icons is very crisp and clear using Verdana. I fixed it so the desktop icons are small and fixed the start menu so they are small there too...what a relief! :D

Now I need some themes or wallpaper as when I clicked to classic theme that took away the desktop picture of a field with the sun and I don't like a blank desktop. I wonder if any of my themes that are for XP will work on Vista?

I can't get my host computer to see this guest on the network so I can't just share the folder with the themes and grab one from the host and stick on Vista...but I wonder if Vista has a themes folder by default because XP doesn't and you have to create one. At least, I feel much better now that I can easily read things. I couldn't read the help file earlier without discomfort. Now I can look for answers to how to do stuff in the help file and try to figure out why the host computer doesn't see this computer. It sees my XP guest computers and the 98SE computer so it should see the Vista one.
--
"The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet.
Mele20 : I never said that it didn't work for everyone. I was obviously referring to myself (and to others who have aging eyes and may have a similar problem) and not to everyone.

Thank you for the link. :) The only tips I have read so far for Vista are in the sticky thread here and I didn't see anything in the thread about this. Vista requires so much fixing that it will take ages to get everything working as much like in XP as possible and disabling services I want disabled, etc. I haven't gotten around to subscribing to Microsoft Vista NewsGroups yet and asking there as there is just an overwhelming amount of stuff to fix in Vista and the first thing I wanted was those damn popups gone as they make it so difficult to fix anything...then I didn't realize until I read the sticky here that I wasn't really in the Admin account so I had to go undisable that (why in the world the default Admin account is disabled by default makes no sense to me) and on and on and on..an endless stream of stuff to fix.

Like the font problem. Why in the world would Microsoft hide it? Why can't I simply right click on the desktop and have it easily available? What is Microsoft's point in making Vista so totally different from earlier OSes? Just to irritate people, I guess, and make it so they have to spend too much time learning a new OS. XP is not broken so why make radical changes in Vista? It is probably to hide the fact that the important change we were promised (new file system) we didn't get...so do a bunch of stuff with the GUI and the users will forget that they didn't get what was the important promised change. I've had transparency for windows and the taskbar since 2003 so that change in Vista doesn't do a thing for me...it is old hat.
--
"The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet.
Mele20 :
said by dave :

I think this statement of what Dell likes cannot be correct.

An informed customer who buys a Vista PC is likely to buy a more expensive computer than an informed customer who buys an XP PC, for the obvious reasons: Vista needs more oomph in the hardware. Therefore, I would have expected Dell to prefer Vista.

As it seems sensible for them to cater to what the customers want, they will today sell you XP rather than risk having you go elsewhere for an XP machine and buy nothing from Dell. But if there is no credible 'elsewhere' because Microsoft won't sell XP, everyone gets to buy the expensive hardware. Don't tell me Dell doesn't like that.

Additionally, people who already have perfectly capable XP machines may eventually succumb to the 'need' to upgrade to Vista, either because the applications they want to run don't run on XP, they see benefit in Vista features, they've just been persuaded by hype, or whatever. They get to buy new hardware from Dell. I'm sure Dell likes that.

So, a successful Vista is in the interest of Dell and their ilk. Meanwhile, while that success is still unclear, of course Dell is hedging its bets by offering XP.

No, Dell is in the business of selling extremely cheap junk computers to its small consumer base and and also to small business base and those don't run Vista very well. Dell has very few consumer users. Their customer base is still 85% corporate users. What consumers they have are usually buying the $300 machine from Walmart or their gaming machines but little inbetween the two extremes. For those consumers who have the smarts to buy from Small Business division, and for actual Small Business customers also, Dell is offering XP over Vista because that is what most customers want and have told Dell they will still want after June 30th. So, Dell accomodates them, whereas, no other vendor has said they will after June 30th. Dell is bucking Microsoft by announcing publicly (not whispering it on the phone if you call them about it) on their site that after June 30 they will continue to make XP available and they will even load it on the computer at the factory. XP will be available on all Dells bought on the website or phone, after June 30, the only requirement being the customer chooses Vista Business or Ultimate and then XP is loaded at the factory. Now they make money off of this in that Vista Business or Ultimate versions cost more than XP and you have to buy one of those two to have the downgrade rights. But the significant thing here is Dell's decision to give at least a little "finger" to Microsoft just as they finally did to Intel some time ago.

As for the corporate customers, they don't generally want Vista either and Dell is not about to piss them off. They'd rather piss Microsoft off than their bread and butter. Dell will still be selling Vista machines with Vista installed for those who wantit now and certainly in the future. Dell corporate users don't generally buy machines that have extremely powerful video cards and fancy audio cards, etc. They don't need that for their business use so I fail to see how selling only Vista machines would make Dell happy. They want, above all, to have happy corporate customers. They care little about their consumer customers who would most likely be the ones possibly buying the expensive machines that can game and run Vista ultimate because they have so few consumer customers. Plus, consumers are treated so badly by Dell as far as support or financing goes that most never return to Dell. Dell still treats its corporate customers quite well and Small Business decently and those users generally prefer XP at this time and after June 30. All Dell is saying to Microsoft is that their decision to pull XP on June 30 is premature and because of that Dell will support its customers most of whom want XP until such time as they no longer want XP on new machines...ie.. until Windows 7 comes out.
--
"The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. There were tangible and justifiable reasons for business to go to Win2K from NT; there were not similar reasons for them to go from 2K to XP. I have not tried yet to access the internet on it. I can't make it (so far) look anything like my XP and finding anything on it is a huge hassle. Maybe once I learn where everything is then I will start to like it but Explorer...ugh...I can't open it like in 98SE and XP. I have had to read up on every single small thing I want to do. No wonder businesses don't want Vista ...all the time it takes to just figure out the OS. The popups are endless. I disabled UAC but I must not have done it right because the popups didn't stop.

I'll stop here so I don't get too OT but I can't, so far at least, see any reason why Vista was created to be so radically different so that you cannot just install it and use it because you can't find anything (wanted to create a downloaded programs folder and even that is not simple like in 98SE and XP) even with it on Classic style which is not really Classic at all. Why did Microsoft decide to reinvent the wheel instead of a logical, gradual progression from 95/98/2000/XP/Vista? I think staying with the wheel (XP) that works great makes more sense.
--
"The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. Dell already has told everyone that if they want XP after June 30, Dell will install XP on their new computer if they have purchased Vista Business or Ultimate so they don't have to uninstall Vista and install XP. A Vista disk will be sent on the side for them to use if they ever want to "upgrade" to Vista. I suspect HP and the others will follow Dell in this and that certainly isn't making Microsoft happy. Of course, what Dell wants is for Microsoft to rescind the June 30 deadline because consumers just want to buy a computer with XP on it not have to pay for one of two versions of Vista in order to get XP after June 30. But with Dell announcing that they will install XP at the factory after June 30 for anyone exercising downgrade rights (and home users also have the downgrade rights) that makes it much easier for users. Dell would not be giving Microsoft the finger if they wanted, as Cringley thinks, to get Microsoft to dump XP. Dell's having a good time selling what folks want: XP loaded on the new computer....such a good time that they actually decided to buck Microsoft after June 30.

As for his extremely uninformed comment about no patches for XP...I think he needs to go back to sleep for another 20 years.
--
"The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet.
Wolfie00 : I think the point of the "save XP" movement is that this is a unique situation that has never occurred before, despite the claims that this is just another OS version and it's all the usual whining about change and increased hardware requirements.

No it isn't. XP's longevity and user loyalty arise from the fact that it was a truly revolutionary change in the consumer OS space for those still suffering with Windows 9x. The value that it brought to the consumer desktop was stupendous; it's an incredibly stable, highly functional platform with awesome backward compatiblity as well. It's a friggin' miracle, is what it is!! Vista is the exact opposite -- with most of its intended features stripped away one by one in order to get something out the door, what Microsoft released was basically a buggy new UI with significant backward compatibility issues with apps and drivers. I know I'm oversimplifying -- so sue me! ;) But the point is, as I keep saying, there is no compelling reason to upgrade to Vista in terms of any fundamental functionality, security, or usability. I can understand how much folks love their XP and how reluctant they are to take on a vast set of "upgrade" headaches for no apparent reason, because I'm one of them.
--
"Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace" -- Dr. Albert Schweitzer
"A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

angussf : Interesting analysis from Cringely. As always, "follow the money" ...

------- Included Stuff Follows -------
I, Cringely . The Pulpit . Wimpy | PBS

...

Several readers are concerned about Microsoft's decision to stop
selling Windows XP and -- most importantly -- end security updates for
the venerable operating system. This has everything to do with
business and nothing at all to do with technology. Wearing my business
reporter's fedora, then, I'll point you back a week or so to
Microsoft's most recent earnings announcement, which disappointed Wall
Street. This is significant because it is hard to find a Wall Street
analyst who remembers the last time Microsoft's earnings were
disappointing. It simply doesn't happen. That's because Microsoft has
a myriad of tools for adjusting the numbers to look just right.

Because Microsoft has so many tools for fine-tuning its financials
(primarily the management of expenses, by the way -- Microsoft makes
so much money that it tunes the numbers by throwing cash away), the
fact that this last set of numbers disappointed suggests to me that
they, too, could have been avoided. Microsoft probably decided to
deliberately take an earnings hit precisely so they could play the "we
have to get the earnings up" card to justify the final death of XP.

Microsoft has been under huge pressure from its hardware OEMs to dump
XP, thus forcing millions of customers who have been avoiding Vista
and Vista's inevitable hardware upgrade to finally buy new computers.
Dumping XP will help Dell and HP AND Microsoft, big-time. With Microsoft abandoning security
upgrades, hackers will eat holes in the old OS practically overnight.
And if one or more of the security companies like Symantec or McAfee
think they can make a business out of defending XP, I simply doubt
that customers will pay.

--------- Included Stuff Ends ---------
Other topics also discussed in his column here:
