That doesn't keep the doors open. What keeps the doors open are the students who pay and fund a school. It's like anything else where different funds can't be touched for other projects. Hence, private colleges are RUN STRICTLY on student dollars. Research is its own best.

While students might receive federal aids, the colleges themselves do not. It's the same concept as a private school. They don't receive help and therefore are free to run as they choose.
