| [XP Home] XP SP3 update procedures.... Home & Pro
With my recent luck with Windows..... !
Thought I'd post this to make sure that I have minimal SP3 problems......
3 systems to update:
1. Intel P4 Gateway-- XP Home. ~6 years old. I have reloaded XP on this sytem since receiving it, using the Gateway SP1 disk, followed by the MS SP2 disk.
2. Intel P4 w/HT Dell-- XP Home. ~3 years old. I have reloaded XP on this sytem since receiving it, using the Dell SP2 disk.
3. Dual Quad Xeons on Supermicro Mb/Chassis-- XP Pro, loaded from XP Pro SP2 Retail disk.
All are running IE7, and I'm not planning on going back to IE6.
My Update plan (As of now...):
1. Set Processguard to Learning mode, then disable it. 2. Turn off AV 3. Turn off Anti-Spyware (Same on each system)
All this before downloading SP3.....

| reply to Jan Janowski Download the "Network Installation Redistributable" rather than use Windows Update. Not only with two computers to do will this save some time; but if something borks you have the ability to restart the upgrade after the underlying issue is resolved. Finally, you need this download to later do a Slipstream of XP for archival purposes.
Once you have the full download, install in Safe Mode (without networking). Check first to be certain the firewall, AV, and any and all anti-malware is disabled. It should be in Safe Mode, but check. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

I have five XP computers. I've updated three so far. No real glitches at all. I did have to chuckle when my "semi-retired-from-everyday-use" XP computer had once again put a checkmark in Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity when I installed SP3. That computer has done that for all three service packs.
Removing the checkmark and rebooting brought back internet connectivity on that computer. |

| The first reboot after the installation of XP SP3, like SP2, is likely the hardest self-configuration exercise your computer has made since the first reboot after installation. It is incredibly taxing on all resources installed on the machine, including hardware. It is not unusual to see formerly hidden issues with RAM or the hard drive reveal themselves.
So, let the computer reboot after the install. It will take longer than usual. When your Desktop is stablilized, all the icons have loaded, ..etc, reboot again before testing any individual feature. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to bcastner Just wanted to thank Bill Castner for these concise instructions. I read this and SP3 forums about issues. Read release notes and various troubleshooting articles. Then I got up my courage to d/l the full copy redistributable (at your recommendation to one user here) and installed it last night in Safe Mode. GOOD THING you recommended checking Task Mgr for any realtime files, because much to my surprise, Sunbelt Counterspy DOES load up in Safe Mode! I killed it and my SP3 install went flawlessly. No problems with my Windows Update Agent yet either, as MU scanned me as usual w/o error message, offering no updates. Thanks for all you volunteers do for at least this 59 y.o. female not so terribly pc savvy. |

@jillyred.net | reply to bcastner At the MS download site I see the XP SP3 Network Installation Package for IT professionals (316.4MB) and the XP SP3 CD ISO Image file (544.9MB). Other than the ISO image being bootable, why is there 200+MB difference between the two? |

bcastner Premium,MVM join:2002-09-25 Chevy Chase, MD clubs: | The ISO 9660 image includes every sector on the CD, whether used or not. It is not a sparse image; nor a format that allows for compression. (Although one could ZIP the ISO image, it is not compressed as offered.) |

| reply to confuzed The SP3 ISO image is not bootable. It contains the SP3 executable, 180MB worth of support files, the .NET installer and and a few other files (see above). -- N.Y. Giants - Super Bowl XLII Champions |
