Folders Containing .MUI files

Hi,

On my C:\ drive, I have two folders, one named b24484696593e3f8d35836 and the other named 5b4ed01ebd7496716082ea27, with both containing 74 .MUI files. One file for every language you can think of.

Each one is about 1.9 MB in size. Do I need these two folders? or can I remove them? I'm using Vista Home Premium with SP1.

Cudni,

Thanks for the response. I didn't install any language, apart from what installed when I installed Vista. It must have installed English by default, but not because I installed it, unless I didn't notice. English is the only language I know, and I don't know that toooo well either.

So, I don't need any of that, except for English. How did all those files get there? I'll take a look at the above referenced KB article when I get a chance later.

The language choice in Regional Settings is not related to the MUI Pack. Regional languages determins the "Input" language. It is a way to quickly set scren fonts and keyboard settings to a particular language choice. It also effects in some cases what language the KB Articles will be shown if you access the Microsoft Technet and other sites. It can at times effect what offerings are shown in Windows Update. But it does not change the Menus, Toolbars, Panels, etc. of the Windows interface.

Beginning with Win2k, Microsoft has offered for those using a localized English version of Win2k or XP the ability to use the Multi-Language Interface. For Win2k and XP, you can only obtain this if you are a VLK license. For Vista that was changed.

As described by "My Digital Life":
quote:
Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) is language packs for Windows Vista that provide a translated version of most of the user interface so that users can change the display language on Vista computer and view wizards, dialog boxes, menus, Help topics, and other items in Windows in a different language, such as for Chinese version to switch language to Japanese, or German to revert to English without reinstalling. However, only Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Enterprise has license to use MUIs.

All other Vista editions, including Windows Home Basic, Home Premium and Business allows only one language been selected and used. Users can select the default language when installing Vista system, but after selecting the language pack to use, system will automatically delete the non-default languages away. System updates and other services of Vista is presented to the users based on the Vista language pack installed, but these updates, although sometimes can be installed from another language, cannot change or upgrade the system to other language set.

Microsoft has released the MUI Vista language packs for both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. However, as mentioned, only for Ultimate and Enterprise users who can download via Windows Update. Beside, for users who have already installed Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), the following error message will appear when trying to install the MUI language packs meant for RTM version of Vista, and the installation of language pack will fail.

The language can’t be selected because the language pack version is incompatible with this version of windows.

So if you do not have a need to flip your Menus, Toolbars, Panels, .etc to be in different Languages, then delete the files. They are upgrades to the MUI files distributed in all copies of Vista RTM (but only usable in certain Vista versions.)

bcastner,

Wow! You must be a font of knowledge. I'd never be able to remember all those facts, even if I had once managed to learn them in the first place. I'm very good a remembering things, for at least about five minutes. After that, I just shrug my shoulders and say, "beats me!"

Thanks, I'll remove those files and free up some disk space. Today, was the first time I noticed those two files. Two of them! I wonder how long they've been there?
