I don't think it's speedtest.net, or FireFox, or IE--if I do the test with Avast on in FF or IE, the percentage meter is really jerky...if I turn Avast webshield off, then everything is ok.
That's strange to me because I get the same speeds with the shields on max, standard, or even off completely. What other services do you run that access the internet, or have an active shield?

I've also noticed (through longterm testing) that AVAST reduces throughput by 20-30% in both FF and IE7. Switched back to AVIRA and now have no problems in this regard. If it were only, say, a 5-10% throttle, I wouldn't mind, but 20-30% is significant.

Besides, AVAST is not as thorough in catching viruses as AVIRA, which is the primary reason for having an antivirus program in the first place.
Avast! is quite thorough in catching viruses actually. In my experiences with Antivir the heuristics were providing us with some false positives that Avast didn't report. I think the heuristics in Avast! is a tad more refined in not showing so many FP's. In the recent comparative, AntiVir only scores 2% better overall than Avast! I'll lose that 2% with Avast! and not get that annoying nag screen and FP heuristic viruses.

EDIT: To show active speedtest with resident protection set to "HIGH" via Opera. It has to be a browser issue, or even a line issue.

You can disable AVG Safe Search in IE 7 or FF add ons, which disables all that stuff (ie. linkscanner) without the security warnings. And it works well!

Which browser are you using? I get wildly inaccurate results using speedtest.net in Firefox, but good tests using IE7. I've been told that the Flash plugin for FF is buggy, but updating Flash has not made any improvement.

By turning off avast! do you mean you're turning off avast! entirely?

If so, try just turning off the Web Shield and see if that helps.
I did [turn off the web-shield], and that is what was causing the issue.

I've been using Avast for a while now...and there's a problem I noticed with my connection--I finally managed to pin it to Avast.

Anyway, with Avast on, if I do a speedtest at www.speedtest.net, the percentage meter is very jerky..it'll be at 15% one second and 32% the next (or it'll just up 1-2%, pause, up 1-2% pause, etc).

My download meter is also really jerky.

I turned of Avast while I was downloading and it solved the problem, so I figured it had to be Avast.

so, is there a fix for this, or do you think it'd be wise to go with another anti-virus?

Also, how would Avast affect my latency on online games? Could it increase it by a portion, or cause more "connection problems"?
