| Why Does Sympatico Keep Changing My IP Address Often
I was wondering if anyone had any idea why Sympatico keeps changing my IP address every couple of days or even every few hours sometimes. I use streaming radion on my Denon receiver and, every time when it happens, it locks up my receiver and I have to reset it - pretty annoying.
I am on 7 Mbps, SNR Margin 27.0, Loop Att. 21.5., th modem is set to "Always On".
Thank you. |

  eh yeah

| reply to Michael9009 Normally your IP will only change when you reboot the modem or computer or go offline for whatever reason.
If its changing every couple of days or every few hours its likely a line problem of some sort.
As hivolt said, specify the modem you have and maybe someone here can look at your line stats from the modem and guide you to the best course of action.
Unlike what DKS says, this is not normal as you stated it. |

| reply to Michael9009 When I was on the 5 Mbps profile it would take weeks, if not months, until my IP would change. Even then, it usually used to happen when there was some king of a power outage and the modem had to reboot. But now, on the 7 Mbps profile, it is a different story.
I have a Draytek Vigor 2800VG Modem/router/etc. (www.draytek.com).
My IT people at work tell me that the IP should remain the same unless the modem is powered off or rebooted. I was thinking it might be Sympatico changing the IP addresses for some untold reason.
I don't know how this would affect the torrent-people, but I can assure you it is very annoing for those streming radio, like myself. |

There's no PPPoE timeout like some smaller ISP's used to do years ago (some may still do). You either have an issue with your modem or your router that causes to drop PPPoE. Look in your logs lately?
I have my VoIP gateway on a Bell dynamic login, and until yesterday when I shuffled my network gear around it was logged in for over a month with the same IP address. -- GOLF LEAFS GOLF! |

Edit: my bad, I didn't notice you replied with that info above... I'm not familiar with the Draytek device. Would you be able to post any logs from it? Just make sure to blank out any sensitive info. -- GOLF LEAFS GOLF! |

What kind of logs should I look for? I can set my router to save log on the computer for the following: Firewall Log, VPN Log, User Access Log, Call Log, WAN Log, Router/DSL information. |

| reply to HiVolt Is this type of log you are looking for, HiVolt? Could you figure out what all these entries mean? I only understand the 5 min transmission speed averages. This is done while streaming radio. I suppose I'd have to keep logging until there is an IP address change, correct? Thanks. |

  stats pls
@videotron.ca | paste an image of the page that shows attenuation, SNR and your synch rates. |

This is an annoying problem which has been well documented in this forum over the last few years. It has happened to myself a couple of times and has lasted several days. Nobody knows why it happens, but when it does it is severely annoying. As far as I can figure, it is a problem on Bell's end and has nothing to do with your modem or computer. Give it time and it will go away, is the unfortunate answer.
You may also wish to open a thread in the Sympatico Direct forum and see if somebody from Bell will actually see the problem while it is happening and finally figure out why for the benefit of all Sympatico customers. |

| reply to Michael9009 There is another possibility that others haven't mentioned. The modem firmware may not be completely compatible with the firmware in the xslam. This we have witnessed in some older Bell modems. Check with your manufacturer to find out if there have been any issues with Bell users specifically. Other than that you could have a defective port on the xslam that you are connected to. That could be tested by the people at the Sympatdirect site. Also mention to them about the modem you are using. They may want you to put the Bell modem on to test with and eliminate your modem as the cause. -- My Canada includes Quebec. |
