Skype phone is much easier to config than the regular SIP adapters. A lot of non-technical people pick Skype to make their life easier.
I wouldn't know; however, judging from Skype softphone, I would agree with you if the SKype ATA has similar configuration menu.

The Skype phone price range from $30 to $150 depending which one you pick.
If you can get a Skype ATA device that plugs into an RJ45 port for $30, that will be OK.

Buy a Netgear SPH200D ($120) plus $24 for 1 year Skype plan. Total $144 and you're covered for one year unlimited call anywhere in USA&Canada($12/month).
Honestly, that won't be a bad idea. I supposed Skype doesn't add those FCC/911 surcharge fees (etc.) that most phone companies do. If this is true, then you pay exactly what is advertised. Can anyone confirm this?

For total $144/year for first year and $24/year after, unlimited USA&Canada. It's hard to beat this plan.
I am sure to some people this is an excellent offer; however, I still won't waste my $$$ on this offer. Free services from GC + GP are still my best choice when it comes to free VoIP services.

Skype has no FCC or 911 fees

Excellent. So, prospected users just need to pay the amount as advertised.

Just note that Skype has no 911 service at all, so if they end up adding that (I suspect they may be forced to, at least for those with SkypeIn numbers), who knows if they will pass an additional charge along.

I cannot use skype because my friends won't see my cid and won't pick up. Has this been improved now?

There still is no caller id in the U.S. for Skype, your call to the party being called will show as 0123456 or your Skype name as your caller id.

If you have Skypein number, the number your friend see will be your Skypein number, not 01234567.

This is NOT true for many countries, with or without a SkypeIn number ("Now known as an Online Number"), including the U.S.
