5 more channels going digital only?

Anyone else receive a letter in the mail recently stating that TLC, E!, QVC, TruTV, Travel Channel and a few others are going digital only, and that you'll need a digital box to view them? wtf is up with that? Now I have to pay an additional amount per month just to watch channels that are included in my already bloated basic cable bill? Talk about extortion...

I got one telling me CSPAN-2, QVC and one other were going and offering a free cable box until August 2009 (I have basic basic). My sister and brother-in-law got a longer letter detailing a whole list of channels. They have one box and now see they are going to have to pony up more $$ for their other TV's.

I realize that they need to remove analog channels to make room for more digital services but there should be a no cost way to receive the channels you are already paying for without needing "the box". Why they cannot treat it like a cable modem and; a) bundle one with your service or b) let you buy your own CableCard's, register them like a cable modem is beyond me. I own my cable modem since I got it before they started providing them and registering it was a breeze.

Thank goodness for competition. You do have options. Go exercise them.

I received the same letter.

TLC
A&E
E!
Sci-Fi
truTV
Animal Planet
Travel Channel
QVC

The only one I cared about was SciFi. Guess I can no longer record it on my Replay without going through a Cablebox.

i agree that as a subscriber, i should not have to pay for a rental box to watch the channels i previously received without paying for a box.
this is unfair pratice in my opinion as verizon fios allows you to have a television connected without a box (from what i have heard)

You heard wrong. You need a box on all TV's with Verizon.

I'm in the same boat. You get the first box for a year free and a free year of iO Navigator. The two additional boxes I need is immediately going to cost another $13/month, just to watch channels that were included before this fiasco.

Just out of curiosity, will I now get all the basic iO channels in addition to the ones I received with the Family package?

[EDIT] I guess not... that's an extra $11/month (checked the iO site).

And soon you are going to get nothing, so I would get used to it.

Why do you think cablevision makes you have internet just to use the phone. GREED!

Comcast and RR do not make you have internet to use the phone. Hopefully when FIOS is everywhere Cv will drop some of their greedy habits.

I don't want to go to FIOS, but if push comes to shove.

And Verizon used to, and possibly continues to force you to have phone service from them in order to get DSL service. But nobody is forcing you to use Optimum Voice, or Optimum Online for that matter. There are many other VOIP providers out there.

But Verizon's boxes are significantly cheaper than Cablevision's.

The big issue here is that subscribers are loosing family cable channels on their extra TV sets. In addition, ultimately, unless Cablevision changes their ways, the sum total of channels being lost in the weeks in months ahead are NOT viewable using the digital cable tuners mandated by the government and found in all new TV sets. So once again, the consumer is getting the short end of the stick on this one. This alone is going to raise the average cable bill a whole bunch outside of the normal rate increases. Time for consumers to make some noise on this one.

Some customers will see less service or have to pay more. Many customers will have a larger selection of channels. I personally don't mind the changes since I already have boxes for my TVs and will have a greater selection of channels.

Are you really that much of a anti-CVer or do you just not understand business. The purpose of what they are doing, as I am sure you know, is to free up bandwidth for additional services.

Last time I looked they teach in business courses you don't buy a business to lose money, therefore the purchase of Newsday should pay for itself. You may need to borrow money to make the initial payments but what you cite has nothing to do with that.

Now you might buy a business that you believe the asset value (ie the sale price) will go up and end up with cash losses to offset your cash flows, if you can take the tax losses in the short term and get higher short term cash flows. But again none of this has nothing to do with their actions of removing analog channels. The removal has been discussed for years.

Cablevision wants to increase my rates by 51%. CV should be treated like a public utility. How would you feel if your electric company wanted to increase your electric rates by 51% in order to provide more capacity for other people?

If they need to increase capacity, let the people getting the additional capacity pay for it! This change won't do shit for me, except cost me an additional $305 per year. Cablevision sucks!

EDIT: Corrected percentage increase to 51% and annual increase to $305.
